speedometer

I could really use some help. I bought a 1999.5 jetta VR6 with an auto trans. I am having a problem with the speedometer. Its the plastic ring on the differential as described in an eariler post. To change this piece does the transmission have to come out of the car or can it be changed through the inspection cover by the firewall. your help would be very much appreciated.
