What are the possible culprits and solutions

Could be many culprits.
Need to find the problem to get a solution.
Is fuel pressure 60/66 lbs?
Are all injectors getting good injector pulse?
Is the injector plugin seated down good?
How are you checking for no fuel to the 5 cylinders?
Is the other cylinder flooding?
Are spark plugs wet on the end with fuel or dry?
Did this happen all at same time?

Is the injector plugin seated down good? is it a single one or 6 individual ones?
How are you checking for no fuel to the 5 cylinders? They said the took the plug out, compression check it and tried a different plug

The mechanics that are putting in my long block called and told me that the #5 cylinder was dry and they want to charge like 800 to replace the spider unit.

The mechanics that are putting in my long block called and told me that the #5 cylinder was dry and they want to charge like 800 to replace the spider unit.Something like that would make me look for another shop. Those guys are either stupid, or crooks. Setting aside whether or not there really is a problem with number 5..... the injectors can be replaced separately, a replacement injector is less than $50, and shouldn't take more than an hour to replace. Also, considering that everything should already be apart to switch it to the long block, it would only take 5 minutes. Alternately, you can buy the complete updated MFI injection assembly that eliminates the common problems of your current system for less than $200.
Keep in mind that I'm not telling to buy or replace anything, until you find out the problem..... just telling you that their pricing is WAY off.

They do not know what they are doing or they are trying to rip you on that deal.
99 does not have a spider assembley injecor system.
Each injector is seperate and can be replaced one at a time if bad.
Proper testing before throwung parts at it.
Tell the to check fuel pressure and for lose of injector pluse to that cylinder.
Post back your fuel pressure readings.
And if it is losing injector pulse on that cylinder.
And how they are testing it?

Really? Trying to rip me off? Told me it was one unit and about $400 for the part.
I am picking it up as it is on Monday.

On the injector go to your local parts place and price one injector and gasket set for it.
We do not have all the details but they could be ripping yoe off just not know what they are doing.

Anyone have a picture of the 99 fuel injector system? Or the updated kit?

Right on do not drive very far.
Find a good repair shop and get it checked and tested.

If drove very far you may be putting in another engine.
You can only drive a few miles with engine damage starting up.

I'm confused now? Could it be a clogged poppet valve they are trying to clean?
Is the the injector part they could just replace?

If the injector is not working and it is getting 12 volts and injector pulse to it they can and should be replaced.
Around 200$ parts and labor.
They do make cleaner stuff for the puppet valve.
Sometime helps on one that is just dirty.
But if it is bad replace it and be done with it.
Good Luck

OK. So there are defiantly 6 injectors in the system?
laxman21

If it's not getting a pulse what does that mean?
MT-2500
06-01-2009, 08:37 AM
Yes 6 injectors and they can be replace one at a time.
If no injector plulse to the injector it will not work or squirt fuel.
If injector not working the first thing to check for is 12 volts to it and injector pulse to it.
A injector noid light tester works good for checking injector pulse.
Good Luck

Fuel acts as the upper cylinder lubricant no lubrication means engine failure
I have seen pistons fused to the cylinder bores due to bad injectors in as little as 5 miles.
You can definitely replace a single injector or swap out one to see if it is clogged.
Since only one is failing you have enough fuel pressure.
This is a minor fix and would cost 90 bucks at my shop

Injector is 65.00$ cost plus gaskets.
Does not leave much labor at 90.00$ FOR THE REPAIR.

I never price a job over the net or phone and I always check it out first to be sure what the problem is.
But as said on one injector the cost is 65.00$ = parts markup plus gaskets and shop flat rate labor + a hr diagnostic time.

$65 is about the most I'd let them charge me for the parts. They can get them for considerably less than that. That would be considering that top quality parts were used. The actual original equipment Delphi brand injector can be had for around $50. Budget injectors can be bought for the mid $30s (I still recommend OE though). I never let a shop charge me more for a part than I can get it myself. Even doing so they can still make a profit on markup.
The job can be done in an hour, but that is pushing it a little to ask them to work on something for an hour straight. Generally for every 15 minutes of work there is a 5 minute break. GM Labor rate for this job is 1.3 hours. For an average shop that doesn't do them regularly, or may not have done one before, I would allow them 1.5 - 2 hours just to make sure they're not too rushed.

my cost for an OE injector is 23 dollars plus change time to replace it in the book is 2 hrs my guys do it in about 30 mins.
90 bucks is fair for me and fair for my customers
I could charge more but then I wouldnt have over 90% repeat business with more recommendations daily.
Its all about the future and not right what I can make for the moment.

A aftermarket BW fuel injector for it is about 65.00$ Cost

I had them do it because I decided I wanted the truck running and didn't want to F up a new engine. The part was about that.
