90 Lumina 3.1 Error Code 22

Just replaced all six fuel injectors with an aftermarket Acell brand purchased from Summit Racing, which solved the running rich problem as a result also passed the manditory Ohio emissions test today. However a nagging intermittent problem is this error code 22 that comes and goes. The engine stumbles and stalls leaving from an idle and the problem appears more prevelent on humid vs dry days. The car has newer ignition plugs, wires, aftermarket coil packs, I even tried the throdle position solinoid and the ECM with no luck. Many people suggested looking at the ground contacts and possibly the ignition wiring harness? Also noticed the speedometer and Tachometer show inaccurate readings. I replaced the speed sensor with a new Delco from the dealer and it did not help this problem. Any ideas?

Start by removing and cleaning throttle body. remove all sensors so you can clean the passages good. Check for vacuun leaks.

Thanks, I will try cleaning the throttle body after removing all sensors. The car had the original ECM replaced back in 1995 during a bout of stalling. The dealer also rebuilt the trottle body at the time. I found this list on line that indicates that an incorrect voltage being put out from the TPS may be the root of the cause. http://www.freeautomechanic.com/diagnostictroblecodes5.html

The code 22 indicates an issue with the TPS, however in order to check the TPS for the correct voltage range you will need a scanner to get the correct values. At times the TPS values could be affected by carbon built up in the throttle body and plate. Often the TPS value will show higher than normal voltage because the plate does not close properly, sensing that it is open. Clean the throttle body good, clear the code by disconnectig the battery and see if the code comes back. If it does have the car scanned. Do not assume that the TPS is defective until you have cleaned or had scanned.

Do not disconnect battery, much easier & safer to pull fuse for ECM located inside car in dash. Disconnecting battery could cause other sensors to not function properly immediately afterward.

Luminacrazy after over a year of trying to find the source of the error code 22, I found the problem. It was a poor electrical connection at the mass air flow sensor. Apparently this sensor is connected with the Trottle Position Sensor, (TPS) and a poor connection will cause an error code 22 low voltage signal causing the engine to stall and run poorly to the point where the vehicle is not drivable. I am sure an expensive scan tool could of helped but I found that whiggling the connector then trying to start the engine caused the check engine light to turn off and the engine began to run like new. Once the problem was discovered all it took was a little dielectric greese on the Mass airflow connector and it solved the problem. There was no corrosion on the connector, the connector was just dry, probably from years of engine cleanings and the 338,000 miles. I wish someone could of helped me fix this sooner but finding the cause of the problem myself was gratifying. Also no local mechanics had a idea how to make the fix and I was given lots of misinformation. They all just wanted to charge me a large diagnostic fee and made no promises.
