88 F150 sounds bad when started

88 5.0 Auto F150 2WD Standard Cab

I started my truck the other day and right as it fired up I heard a scraping like sound for a few seconds then it went away.(sounds more like what you would hear if someone held a pencil to a metal fan blade for a few seconds) It has been doing it ever since. It was only making this noise when you started it, but I have noticed lately that after starting it, when you first put it in reverse -you can kind of hear it making that noise...sounds to be coming from around the starter/flywheel area to me, but not sure.

Any ideas on what could be making the sound? I don't know where to start! Thanks for your help!

Sounds like the starter drive gear is hanging up in the ring gear of the flywheel. It's supposed to retract once you get it started. It could be due to worn or damaged teeth on either side. You can pull the starter and inspect them. While you have it out you could grease the shaft on the starter drive. This may help it to retract easier.
