1994 GT Sport acceleration problem

Hello Ev1.. I have a 94 Gt Sport with a 3.1 V6 that, for the most part, runs great... but right after start-up until it warms to around 60 degrees on the temp guage, I have an acceleration problem under light load... I depress the accelerator pedal about a quarter inch and get a tremendous dead spot and the RPM's drop right off, but not to the point of stalling out, YET ...when I depress it further, the car takes right off... It has been doing this since I bought the car 4 months ago ( just been busy with other repairs until I can get to this one... front struts are next on the list) and am thinking it may possibly be ignition problem (plugs, etc.)... but are there any other possibilities I may consider in the process?... I have also ran injector cleaner through the system a few times in the past few months... thanks from a newly devoted Grand AM lover...

P.S. in another post of mine, I was asking about another problem concerning the "check engine" light and it was suggested that I check the MAF sensor.. I investigated and found that there is not one on the engine

Have you checked for trouble codes ?

I'd also test the Throtle Position Sensor- TPS.

I agree check for codes and test tps, (find signal wire to pcm, use DVOM back probe the tps signal wire behind the tps connector at idle should be between .59-.64V and as you increase the throttle slowly voltage should slowly increase. If you see any sudden decrease in the voltage as the throttle is increased that is your dead spot.
