MY Eleanor 1967 Shelby Mustang WIP

Time to begin a new project!! :bananasmi
After doing the Aston Martin DBR9 and the Peugeot 405T16GR, I want to build a car with a mix of old and new schools, and the Eleanor 1967 Mustang is a great example of that kind of vehicle.
http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y245/sam01contact/7.jpg
http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y245/sam01contact/8.jpg
I loved this car since the first day I saw the "Gone in Sixty Seconds" movie (the 2000 version), and, like many modelers, I patiently waited for someone to do the scale model kit.
For some reason (licensing ?) nobody did the kit, until Scale Productions surprised us last year with a beautiful transkit to transform AMTīs 1967 Shelby Mustang into the mighty Eleanor.
A little background of the real car:
Originally, Eleanor was going to be a GT40, but, due to cost issues, the movie producers decided to go with a custom 1969 Shelby GT500. Famed Hot Rod illustrator Steve Stanford did the design, and Chip Foose was hired
to turn Stanfords work into a reality.
When the prototype was completed and approved, Cinema Vehicle Services produced 7 different Eleanors for use in the production of the film. None of them were actual Shelby Mustangs but converted standard 1967 Mustang fastbacks. Five of them were totaled during stunt sequences. Nicolas Cage and Jerry Bruckheimer kept the remaining two.
After the movie, was released, Eleanor became an automotive icon, and Unique Performance got the license to build and sell the car.
In 2007, Unique Performance filed for bankruptcy, and the license went to Classic Recreations.
My scale model project:
Eleanor is supposed to be a standard, NOS powered Shelby GT500, but there has been a long debate about the "right" Eleanor configuration: Standard or automatic transmission...NOS bottle in the cockpit or in the trunk,
stock or custom dash, etc.
So, I plan to build MY version of Eleanor (hence the title of this WIP). Thereīs no doubt about how the body should look like, but the interior, engine and suspension will be built with my personal preferences. :D
These are the elements I will use in this project:
http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y245/sam01contact/1-3.jpg
This is THE kit you need for the Scale Productions transkit. It is AMT 1967 Shelby GT 350 (Stock number 384929).
The parts of the kit are very good. Some pieces are oversimplified, but the overall appearance of the model is very good.
http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y245/sam01contact/2-3.jpg
Hereīs the Scale Productions Transkit. It is expensive ($115.00), but itīs quality is superb. Everything from the body to the photoetched pieces is top notch.
http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y245/sam01contact/4-3.jpg
The instructions of the transkit are very good, illustrated with color photos. The AMT instructions are a little bit on the simple side...the union points of the parts should be clearer, and AMT could be more specific with the
paint colors to be used.
http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y245/sam01contact/5-3.jpg
Talking about colors...I was lucky enough to find the codes to mix the paint used in the original car
Body - Pepper Grey Metallic - Dupont Fleet 44490
Stripes - Black Metallic - Dupont Fleet 44435
I was a little concerned about the size of the metal "flake" of the paint looking too big in 1:24, but I sprayed a test card and it looks very good!
http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y245/sam01contact/3-3.jpg
I am convinced that a very important (and fun) part of our hobby is research. I spent the last couple months looking for information and images of this car in the Internet. I burned a reference cd with more than 300 photos of the car and itīs components.
Of course, I already had the movie!! :iceslolan
I also recommend the RIDES episode about Eleanor. This is included in the second season dvd set.
http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y245/sam01contact/6-1.jpg
So, everything is ready to go!! I am sorry for such a long opening post. I hope someone finds this information as interesting as I do! :iceslolan

Looks like it'll be a VERY nice build. I'd have a tough time justifying the cost of the transkit, and would most likely just modify the kit until it was what I wanted. This will be a build to watch.
Just one question, all that paint, and one itty bitty car, think you have enough? hahaha!

I had that same thought when I was in the paint shop :grinyes:
This is the minimum I could buy..I guess I will have to find a home for the extra paint after I finish.
Iīm glad youīre following the WIP!

To be totally accurate, for both the Unique Performance, and the movie stunt cars, you need to use the Total Control suspension kits, and tubular subframe connectors. I have a nice Zip file of all the images you'll need to re-create this interesting "lay down" coilover setup.

I am sorry for the delay of my first update, but I had to reinstall windows after a darn virus infected my computer
But enough words! Let me show you the progress on the pony!
I glued the block and bell housing and painted them with ford engine blue:
http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y245/sam01contact/ENGINE1.jpg
I also painted the water pump/front cover the same color and added some detail painting with testors aluminum plate:
http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y245/sam01contact/ENGINE2.jpg
Hereīs the oil pan painted in gold:
http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y245/sam01contact/ENGINE3.jpg
I opened holes for the exhaust manifolds and distributor wires in the cylinder heads, and painted them with testors aluminum plate:
http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y245/sam01contact/ENGINE4.jpg
This is a photo of the pulleys and alternator:
http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y245/sam01contact/ENGINE5.jpg
The fan included in the kit is awful, so I built Model car garageīs fan. Hereīs a comparative photo:
http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y245/sam01contact/ENGINE6.jpg
You donīt get an oil filter or oil dipstick in the kit, so I had to scratchbuild them:
http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y245/sam01contact/ENGINE7.jpg
The starter inlcuded in the kit could be better, so I scratchbuilt it with aluminum and styrene tubing. Hereīs a look at the pieces:
http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y245/sam01contact/ENGINE8.jpg
Hereīs the engine so far...what do you think?
http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y245/sam01contact/ENGINE10.jpg
http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y245/sam01contact/ENGINE11.jpg
http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y245/sam01contact/ENGINE12.jpg
By the way, I cleaned the valve covers and air filters provided in the Scale Productions transkit, but I see the air filter looks to be accurate for a dual carburetor setup, not for a single carburetor engine:
http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y245/sam01contact/ENGINE9.jpg
http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y245/sam01contact/05164lg-04.jpg
This is how the correct air filter should look like:
http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y245/sam01contact/DSCF5329-sm_preview.jpg

Great job so far very tuff build as I can attest to 1st hand, as I've done dozens of versions. This car(scale versions) has come to be an obsession of mine which stems from my 1:1.
This kit seems to be amazing, bummer I never knew it existed nor this site. Any help or reference I may be of service just ask, although you seem to be quite capable.

Click on my sig for pics of my 1:1...as you can see it's not an "Eleanor" but a 67 exterior on a 68 interior.
There are many reasons why I kept the 68 feel along with liking it better to boot. The car is a 68 and I'm old(born in 68 too) so I wanted to keep the 68 feel. This was my 1st car too so it has the sentimental factor(obsession). The color was also close to the same as my 1st resto in 91(Acura Cobalt blue).
Back to the regurlarly scheduleded programing....I found this site yesterday doing seaches for the scale wheels as I need 1/24 for several rc's. I also discoverd this SP kit your using to boot, life would have so much simpler. This kit(forum) has inspired me to do 100% 1/24.(have two 90% 1/18)

With this kit you can make close to the most accurate movie car that I've seen to date. From picks I looks like Mikes version is the 1st I've seen 100% accurate cosmetically on the exterior. I do see some discrepancies under hood and on the interior.
Its your car build the version you like. To get the rest 100% right you have to take a lot of ques from the 1:18 Shelby version.
Let me know what you need I have literally built this car daily in my mind since from around 02 I'm nutz.
You have me giddy again its like I'm building it myself...
Here is my pick of the air filter pieces I hope it help its as easy mod with your apparent skills.

Thanks for the photos Mike!
Vikingz, your "Kurstang" is very cool!! The color you used is just gorgeous!
You are right, I will do my own version...there are many options to build this car, and now I have a clearer idea of what I want. :iceslolan

hi Sam :)
I nearly missed this thread! Uhoh
Typical of you to chose a really cool subject and I am sure that this will become the reference thread for future builds. Really looking forward to seeing your updates

Sam
Don't mean to steer you away from "your" intended build in any way....but being/judging from the amount of research you have done, I'm guessing your intentions are to be as close to "movie correct" as possible. Otherwise why do all the research??
As just mentioned this could be the research thread even if you choose to go different directions throughout.. The information could be here for those who wish to proceed with the Unicorn.
I don't know how much research you have done or what documentation you already have but I literally have thousands of pics and can help you decipher "Movie Correct" vs non.
Let me Know if you need engine pics from the actual CVS car that was sold. From all my research and deductive reasoning it was either a "Top speed" car or a "Top Speed" car no other option its an auto. Most if not all the stunt cars were damaged or interior cars were all sticks along with close up beauty promo bunch.
Since your working on the engine details...Most people who are the "Movie Correct" crowd are the top speed bunch.

vikingz, I would really love to do a 100% accurate Eleanor, but I know myself, and I would end up working 3 years in the model :iceslolan
After all the research, I am trying to define the modifications I can do in a reasonable period of time, working with pieces that actually exist in available kits.
The plan is to use the kit engine, and add the transkit pieces. I am still trying to figure out how could I modify the air filter to a single carb version.
I will do a manual transmission car (I want to do the GO BABY GO shifter knob) with the movie dash. I will add the nitrous swithes, but no bottle in the interior.
In the suspension/chassis, I will upgrade the stock suspension, but I donīt think I will replicate the full Total Control system.
I think the plan is to take some choices in the process  I am still learning some things about this gorgeous car! By the way, I would be very grateful to receive a copy of those photos and know your opinion about the correct Eleanor configuration!

Time for an update!!
Maybe not a big advance, but I want to take my time with this engine. :iceslolan
I added Model Car Garage pulleys and belt. Then, I installed and wired the scratchbuilt coil, starter and alternator. I also detailed and installed the MCG fan:

Wow great job Sam your work is flawless along with you photography skills to capture it all to boot. They make Evergreen ribbed plastic stock that I think would be perfect in modifying the cover with, I will dig some up tomorrow and post, I used it as grills on 1:43.
What use to add tremendous time on this build was the body work along with making the wheels and grills...all the things in the kit. You now have loads of extra time.
Here's my opinion or what I know of the existing pics of the "Movie" car..facts. As you know 11 cars were made, but only three had the full suspension mods for all the stunts. Of those three two were destroyed in filming which leaves 1 actual running survivor. I also believe of the total 11 only 3 survived after filming. I also know that CVS kept that one remaining running car after filming which was the one that was eventually sold yrs later on ebay. The running survivor was an auto all cars were autos, only the rigged(non functional) prop cars were manuals.
So IMO the only car that wouldn't be damaged would be the car just used in driving straight and fast...which in my mind would be the "movie" correct car. The trans kit provides everything necessary to make a "movie" correct exterior. There are well documented pics for interior along with the movie clips.
The following pics(close you eyes Sam)...are from one of the original press release photo shoots and yrs later of that same car when sold on Ebay, which is above mentioned CVS car. Don't be scared away from this cover either, It would be just about the same mods as you intended just add photo etched mustang script...see below.
Don't fret my father in law and brother in law own and operate a thophy engaving shop. I will run it by them and see if we can photo etch a few covers tomorrow.

Here is the info I promised above..It's possible there are other sizes/options, these are the four I just so happened to have on hand for my prior projects(RC grills). I feel like an internet stalker:runaround:
While the material was out I made this cover for you Sam Its yours if you want it. If anyone wants I can provide a quick SBS. It may be a little large as the only oval cover handy was from 1/24 die cast. It don't have the "mustang" photo etch kit so I can't go any further but you get the idea. I made the little circle with plastic stock but you probably have a perfect washer handy from your detail kits.
I talked to the in laws they were open to the topic so I sent them photos, I'll keep you informed if something positive arises.

vikingz, you really know this car!!
Well, I have been thinking about this, and I believe that, since we did not see Eleanorīs engine (or suspension) in the movie, Itīs safe to build my own "interpretation"
Having this in mind, I guess the choice for us modelers is to build either a)Our own version of the car or b) One of the cars that were used to make the movie.
Man, thatīs one good looking air filter!! I would like to get that piece, but I am living in Mexico City, and it would take forever to send the filter here (Mexican postal service is S L O W :sly:)
Doing photoetched covers for this filter is a good idea! I think there would be a great interest for them!
I will take your idea to do the modification to the transkit filter, but I will keep the COBRA lettering :iceslolan Iīll show it to you in a few days!

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y245/sam01contact/en2.jpg
The kit carburetor is the worst I have seen, so I used a carburetor from a Ford NASCAR kit. My camera zoom is very limited, so I hope you can see the carburetor linkage (detail master):
http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y245/sam01contact/en3.jpg
I glued the carburetor in place and did some wiring and plumbing (I know the single hole in the top of the carb looks awful, but I will glue the air filter permanently over it). You can see the detail in this photos, including throttle cable, brackets and spring:

spideyman, I used Model Masters Magnesium metalizer...I did not buffed the paint, since I wanted to keep the matt finish.
What did you use for the shift linkage and rods..?
stump, In the kit the linkage and rods are used in a single part, so I removed the rods and sanded the linkage parts as thin as I could. Then, I opened holes to use rigid wire (from a Detail Master window net kit)

I figured out how to convert the air filter for a single carb setup!!
I used 2 pieces of a photoetched grille to do the metal stripes and some Detail Master pieces to do the ring and wing nut.
I also used styrene to do the lower plate of the filter.
I hope you like the final result:

WOW those headers are amazing, please show us how you made them!!!!
Thank you for your kind words guys!
Well, I donīt have photos of the process, but hereīs how I did them:
1) Cut 8 pieces of solder (4 per header). The length of the pieces depends on the headers you want to replicate.
2) Glue 2 blocks of 4 pieces of solder each with a little drop of Super Glue in one extreme of the block. You donīt need a lot of glue...this is only to have the solder in place.
3) Make the collectors using 2 sizes of aluminum tubing
4) put a drop of clear epoxy inside the collectors. In the tube with the larger diameter (the smaller tube will connect to the exhaust System).
5) place one block of solder pieces inside each collector (you will have to sand down the solder that will be inside the tubing for a tight fit).
6) After the epoxy dries for an hour, you can easily bend each piece of solder to replicate the headers you want.
Please let me know if you have any question! :)

After finishing the engine, I have spent a lot of time looking at photographs of the real Eleanor and measuring the chassis and kit parts to do the upgrades I want to the suspension and undercarriage.
First, I upgraded the front suspension (the kit present the front suspension in a single piece), and scratchbuilt a rack and pinion steering system:
http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y245/sam01contact/suspension1.jpg
http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y245/sam01contact/suspension2.jpg
Then, I converted the rear suspension from a leaf spring to a four link system:

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y245/sam01contact/suspension5.jpg

I still need to do a couple more pieces and paint the parts before putting everything together:
