911 Carrera Progress (4 pics)

I was able to borrow a friend's digital camera so I quickly took these progress pics on latest project.

Body has been painted (2 layers of primer and 3 layers of TS-14 Black) but still needs to be treated with rubbing compound and a final waxing. The last pic has some of the parts that are allrdy dry (most of the other parts are drying in an empty aquarium to keep them from dust getting on them).

I hope I can borrow the camera some more in the future so I can post some more stuff.

P.S.: masking the windows is a real pain in the *$% :D

looks good. I dont have to polish my alfa, it came out with clear reflection right after 4th coat of orange. :eek:

I always have to polish a bit cuz I'm still not comfortable enough w the Tamiya spray cans but practice makes perfect they say ;)

as for the polishing, I kinda think of it as the cherry on the cake , a little detail that makes the total image of your model really stand out.

Is that Tamiya grey primer? If that is, then that may explain why you're getting more-than-normal orange peel, cause grey primer is a lot coarser than Tamiya white primer.

Thx for the advice, never payed attention to the difference in primers.

I only use(d) grey on cars that will get a darker color (like this one). Most of the time I use white primer but I've only recently changed from army modelling to car modelling and I'm not quite comfortable w the cans yet.

Army modelling was mostly grey primer, airbrushing and a lot of weathering.

Big setback today, since it's one of the older tamiya kits it doesn't come with a masking template for the windows so I had to mask it myself.

Rear and back windows came out ok but I f*^ked up the front window. Hence 2 questions:

1. How do I clean this mess up?
2. How do I prevent this from happening again? I allrdy read somewhere of first clearcoating the masking work and than spraypainting the black.

If it's acrylic, you can use a soft coton and water.. could help, dont use THinner, it will fog the window !

Personnaly, I use handbrush with acrylic paint with good success. those old tamiya model have a "deap" line that keep the paint out of the main window.. anyway hope you find a way to save this

If you used acrylic paint, you can wash it off with ammonia or a cleaner that has ammonia in it. In any case you can prolly use a tooth pick and gently scrape the paint off where it ran under the tape. If by chance you mildly scratch the window, you can rub it with Tamiya compound to polish it back out. I always air brush my window trim on with acrylics in case something like this happens.:)

Just kidding man, thx for the tips guys. I'll try scraping it off since it was enamel paint and use acrylics next time.

Did you use Tamiya masking tape or the crappy 3M? You can take the paint off with brake fluid and it'll be like new, don't worry about the windshield bieng damaged from the brake fluid, I've put plenty of windshields in brake fluid after messing them up, and if you're in doubt and think it'll leak through, MASK IT AGIAN!!!!!

Tamiya masking tape all the way, that stuff is great (if in the hands of people that aren't as clumsy as myself).

I think I'll try the brake fluid first before trying to scrape it off cuz that kinda scares me a bit to be honest (and I can try out the brake fluid quickly on an old window to see if I found the correct one).


I also learned an imortant lesson again, I messed up my masking job on the last window cuz I was getting annoyed and wanted to hurry things.

It might not work right away, you have to leave it overnight, maybe a day/2 days. To my knowledge, brake fluid does NOT damage clear parts.
