anybody ever heard of Maaco body shops? a guy over on WICGP posted a few pics of his car after being painted at one. he said it only cost him $500 for the whole car. just wondering how their work is? i saw there is one not too far from me here in WI and was thinking of bringing my GT there for a little rust/hail repair.

thanks

If you're a longtime Wisconsin resident, you may remember Earl Scheib's Paint Shops. They offered similar services to Maaco--painting a car for $199.95 back in the '60's and '70's.

Before having anyone like this paint your car, read the guarantee and ask questions first. Don't do like I did in 1967, when I had my '64 GTO painted by Earl Scheib in Milwaukee. It was black and I had them repaint it to "freshen up" a dull, lack-luster factory paint job. I removed the bumpers and most all of the chrome trim. When they painted it, there were many runs in the new paint. Since it was enamel, they had to wait one month before they could sand out the runs and repaint. The day I took it in, the trees in front of my house were dripping sap as maple trees sometimes do. I told the shop about it and they said it would be no problem. I guess it wasn't, because they painted over the sap--you could see the spots under the black paint. At that point, I hired an attorney. He explained the warranty to me as follows. Earl Scheib will repaint the car if you are not satisfied. If you're not satisfied the second time, they will repaint again. In other words, your only recourse is to let them keep putting layers of paint on the car until you give up. I gave up and had the car stripped by a body shop for approx. $1500, which was more than the car was worth in 1967.

I suspect Maaco has the same warranty. You cannot recover the original cost or damages due to their poor work if the result does not meet with your satisfaction.

i know a guy who had a body kit and spoiler painted by maaco for his eclipse. the finish was HORRIBLE. terrible case of orange peel, and some of the paint was cracking. keep in mind tho that this was done on plastic parts, and i dont know if the body kit was properly prepped, because plastic body kits usually need much more complicated prep than something that has been painted before.

I had a used ram air hood painted and repaired at maaco, horrible job. I get there to pick my car up and.. There was dust all over it and dust in the paint, there was dried up drips of clear coat hanging off the hood where it meets up with the windsheild. The paint was'nt dry. The hood had a chip broken off the corner I had them repair, then they broke it off while putting it back on. So I snapped on them and they did it over again turned out Ok. Now 2 years the paint is starting to chip off. Maaco is cheap but you get what you pay for.

thanks for the input guys. i kind of figured for that kind of price it couldnt be that great. guy that had his car painted there said it has been 2 months now and it still looks good, however i can only imagine what it will look like in a year...
