TCC Solenoid ?

I have a 1993 Lumina, 3.1 L (not 3100 engine), with the 3T40 transmission.

I'm having a problem where I drive the car on the hiway for awhile, then when I slow down to a stop, the engine stalls. restart and put it into gear it stalls again. Once it cools down, everything is fine. Checking the codes, it shows an EGR problem. I replaced the EGR valve, same problem. Doing some reaserch, I suspect a sticking TCC Solnoid.

I would like to disconnect the TCC Solnoid wires and drive the car to see if thats the problem but I don't know if disconnecting the TCC Solnoid and driving the car will do any damage to the Transmission. Anyone know if I can safely do this?

No, it will not damage the trans. Did you clean the EGR line from the exhaust to valve? How about connections EGR to all other connected circuits?

What your describing is most definitely the TCC lockup going bad. I'm assuming you have the 3-speed transmission... I've had 3 Luminas with the 3-speed and all three had this exact problem. One car has 100k on it, the other 130k and one with 250k. They'll "shudder" when you let off the gas and sometimes it'll stay locked up, stalling the car. I've never had any problems with the TCC lockup on the 4-speed, only the three.

Thanks guys, yes it is the 3 speed. I disconnected the wiring and the stalling has quit. I'm just going to drive it disconnected for the time being.

Not to long, the fluid will potentially overheat with no TCC function.

No, it will not damage the trans.

Incorrect about the the trans fluid, the convertor on these cars is very loose, you are driving at higher speeds with the convertor not locked up, this built in slippage will generate more heat in the convertor, this may not be a short term issue if not driven hard. But leaving it this way is a no-no.

Yeah well I've heard that the transmission in lockup gets less fluid flow. I wouldn't consider the convertors on the 3t40 that loose. They do have a small fluid capacity though. Anyway, I don't think the transmission is going to necessarily overheat just beacause the lockup is unplugged, depends on driving conditions.
