If you look under your car just behind the Cat you will see the O2 sensor on top of a piece of pipe that looks like a U. This is the U-bend. It restricts the exhaust and causes a decrease in HP due to that restriction. By removing the U-bend the exhaust is less restricted and the power improves due to the improved flow of exhaust gas. There is a piece of pipe manufactured for the purpose of removing the u-bend. It contains a bung that the O2 sensor goes into. If you purchase a cat back exhaust system it will come with a piece of pipe equipped with the same bung.

The downpipe comes from the rear exhaust manifold down to the cat. You can reuse the one you have or you can purchase a new one along with a high flow aftermarket cat. The OEM cat is a good one and if you don't have any issues you can reuse it. You will need to have the cat back system welded onto the cat by a shop if you want the best installation.

I hope this answers your questions.
