Lamborghini LP670-4 SV
Bugatti Veyron
McLaren SLR 722
McLaren F1

Now all you need to do is catch the Stig taking off his helmet. :)

Looks a bit like Rowan Atkinsons car, unlikely but you never know they may have borrowed it? Anybody have any ideas as to which one it might be??

Peloton25

I had the same assumption when I saw it and if you'll recall, Top Gear did borrow his F1 once before when they compared old and new supercars a few years back.

I had a few aces against Mr Atkinson back in the 80's when I was racing classic Jaguars, he was driving an Aston Martin DB4GT if memory serves me right. I would have no problem believing that he would be more than willing to loan his car for such purposes, he was a totally nice guy to chat to completely unaffected by his fame, very useful behind the wheel, beat me every time I believe.

It does look like #061, although Rowan isn't mentioned in the write up - scanned pics later. Some good interior shots (none of the chassis plate though :banghead: ) and a shot of the mobile phone near the door release for the lhs passenger. Best quote I've found so far - "The Mclaren looks agood at launch. By the time the Veyron has clacked into 2nd, the F1 has disappeared" - we'll have to wait til the 28th June for the BBC2 show to see the winner of the Drag Race :)

Unpossible - you are kidding, right? Was it tied to something very heavy? :lol2:

Launching a Veyron has to be a no-brainer. We're talking stand on the brake, bring up the revs, let the brake go and mash the go-pedal at the same time. Four little puffs of smoke and then "rocket ship" is what I would expect every time. I'd be asking for a refund if my Veyron lost to the McLaren F1 in a drag race. Seriously!

*SPOILER*

Did anyone watch the first episode of season 13? In the season preview they do, it shows the McLaren and Bugatti racing, followed by an in car shot of the Bugatti with Hammond driving and him saying "How is this happening?!", then they switch to the outside view where it shows the McLaren beating the Bugatti.

Thoughts?

I think the Bugatti's handicap is it's very hot outside and it uses turbochargers, so the intercoolers must be having a pretty hard time trying to cool down the air.

The 4 turbos on the Veyron didn't like the heat in Dubai, making it get away a little slower than anticipated - but did it claw back in the latter part of the drag?......... ;)

That's the question on everyone's minds I'm sure!
Lets hope - for the sake of the general public's opinion of the F1 - that Rowan's road car does the business! Although, knowing Top Gear, they often show false-results - Almost all Jeremy's car reviews start good if they're gonna end up bad, and start bad if they're gonna end up good. And the  Michael-Schumacher-is-the-Stig moment  :headshake?

It won't have any credibility if it's clear that the Veyron's performance was less than normal. Run 10 F1s against 10 Veyrons in the hands of talented drivers and I think the expected results would be pretty clear.

I don't think drag racing was really on the mind of Gordon Murray when he lifted his pencil to create the F1.

Query - Hammond says he is pleased to be in the Veyron because the F1 is worth "2 million quid" (2 million british pounds).
If so, this is a lot more than what we understand standard F1s to be currently worth, yes?
Do you think he was exaggerating, or that prices really have gone up that much?

Peloton25
06-29-2009, 04:39 AM
As I stated on another forum - Top Gear is, and always will be, an entertainment program, not an educational one. Always keep that in mind when it comes to their "facts". ;)

As for his price estimate it may be high, it may be low - depends on the F1 in question and its condition. Then, of course, how badly a prospective buyer wants to own it and the current owner wishes to keep it. Two million quid is the equivalent of about $3.2M USD right now. With another F1 changing hands for just over $4M USD earlier in the year, surely that's given some strength to the market for F1s, but it doesn't instantly elevate the rest to that level, as the one that sold was practically brand new. Still, I think something more than $2.5M USD or perhaps closer $3M USD might be the going rate for an F1 now.

Just a little further out of my reach at the moment... ;)

The new Murcie was covered under a separate segment of the episode. At one point Hammond did a little stoplight drag race with it against an SLR 722 edition in downtown Abu Dhabi and the Murcie lost that race by a bit.

My guess is that around a track it would be very close if not in the F1's favour, possibly the all wheel drive of the Veyron saving it's dignity.

I'm not surprised the Buggati won. It's power to weight ratio might not be as good, but it has 7 gears, a double clutch semi-automatic gearbox, and launch control. To be honest, I kind of think that is cheating when it comes to acceleration (and top speed). Reason why, if the Bugatti had a 6 speed manual like the McLaren it would have been dusted. Though technically, the McLaren should pull more Gs when it's accelerating, since the Bugatti is just fast because it launches well and shifts fast.

My guess is that around a track it would be very close if not in the F1's favour, possibly the all wheel drive of the Veyron saving it's dignity.

Not really. The handling of the McLaren might feel good, but it really isn't that great, kind of like the Audi R8. For example, look at these lap times on FastestLaps. The McLaren even gets beaten by a Corvette Z06. One of the McLaren's main problems is it has so much body roll, and that the suspension was meant for road use, not track use.

Sami Aaltonen

But what about the weight?

Bugatti....1888kg and McLaren F1 just over 1100kg. Bugatti has lots of more weight which means problems on the coners even that it has 400hp more power. I think McLaren will beat the Veyron, even that it is more road than track car.

The McLaren F1 in road guise has pretty soft springs for comfort, but even if the F1 has a lot of body roll, it still retains a significant tire patch due to the suspension setup so it still grips like cars that don't show that kind of body roll. The Tsukuba lap was a joke when the F1 did its run, the driver was late on the throttle, couldn't get it to shift into 3rd, and the track conditions sucked (faint wet layer on track + low temps). While Flemke lambasts the F1 as having no grip, no downforce, etc, etc. I would have used a different method to modification of the standard F1

I'm of the opinion that there are not many places where an F1 could beat a Veyron, if at all. The big Bug has the edge widely on power, but also offers much better brakes, more grip, and better traction. The only statistic it loses badly on is curb weight, but multiple tests have proven it can overcome that factor and still perform exceptionally well.

Of course I prefer the McLaren by a wide margin as many others do, but there's no denying the capabilities of the Veyron.
