Went to a hobby store, and all tamiya paints in bottle are acrylic paints, didnt see any enamel. Are they all like that?

From what I have seen and used so far, acrylic bottles come in 2 sizes, big and standard ones.
The enamel ones are much smaller. Yes they do come in enamel form. Funny that your shop dont carry them.

What would you pick for small parts on the painted body?
I have expiriensed alot of frustration with testors enamel paints, they always leave brush marks after painting, and dry very fast.

I have very successful experiences with using tamiya enamel paints on small parts and I'll recommend them to you anytime.

I am new to modeling so it helps that tamiya enamel paints can be so forgiving and not leave any brush marks.

The small enamel paint that you buy from tamiya have to be mixd with a 70% ENAMEL THINNER with 30% paint and it should be just right.

Try to use only Tamiya enamel thinner to mix to be on the safe side. I havent try other thinners though so I am not too sure about that.

Hope this helps.

so tamiya enamel doesnt come with thinner inside like testors?

Yup, u have to add in your own mix of thinner.

The tamiya enamel paint is very thick, try to experiment with the percentage needed. Give it some time to dry after painting the small part and you will see the results.

Depending on the thickness that you paint with, normally with small parts I'll try to paint with only 1 application. If I tried another application, the paint doesnt come out right and I find it harder to paint.

I do believe that Tamiya Enamels are only available in Asia. Correct me if I am wrong though.

Tamiya Enamels are available all over the world. Some shops may not want to carry them because of the stigma attached to enamels, but, if they carry testors, they should carry Tamiya.

On the side of thinners - yes, they do contain thinner. You should thin them for use with airbrushing. Normal painting can be done straight out of the bottle, although some people feel the paint is a little thick, but that's a personal preference. Remember, brushing will always leave a thicker coat than airbrush/ spray.

Personally, I've found Tamiya Acrylic and Enamel to be very similar. I have noticed that the Enamels have slightly better finish with mettalics most of the time, especially the silvers.

I prefer the Acrylics though, 'cause the washup is so much easier, without having to use solvents etc. etc., but depends on what you like.

Persevere, and you'll find your preference. Enjoy

I have seen Tamiya enamels available in europe and asia, but not in Canada and America for some reason, who knows the reason?

It may be coincidence that I have not seen any, but when I looked at the Tamiya USA paint listings, they only listed acryllics, no enamels.

For small parts, I use both enamels and acryllics depending on the color I need, I have not had any problem with either for painting small details.

Tamiya enamels are NOT officially available in North America. They do not import them. There are a few hobby shops that grey market them, and you can order them from hobby world in Japan.

Any main reason why your part of the country dont have taimya enamels?
Seems weird to me.
Could it that tamiya's competitor sells it cheaper in your area?

It could very well be, but it doesn't help that the competitor may be cheaper and the quality is a lot worse, which is why I try not to use the competitor's paints.
I'd sooner pay a few cents more and get something a lot better.

I've heard two reasons. That they contain a chemical which is now banned in the US for consumer use. Which there are many these days. The other (more likely) is the consumer demand does not exist. Who knows the real reason. I will bring it up with someone at Tamiya at the TamiyaCon.

I would go with the chemical one....
I know a lot of people that would rather buy Tamiya enamels, so I don't think it is a lack of consumer demand.

Best 1 Hobby has a full rack of Tamiya enamels in their store in SoCal. Do they have it in their online catalog?

Anyway, they're the only place I've found in the U.S. that has them.

They come in little square 10 ml bottles like Testors.

Yup, those are the exact same tamiya enamel paints.
They cost alittle more than acrylic but once you open it you will know its worth it.
Most of them I opened are very thick and you most definitely have to add thinners to it. All in all, the amount after adding thinners should give you about 1 and the half times the actual amount needed to paint.

Just wondering cause i always use acrylics and have never nver used enermal......
I've heard that enermal can't be stored for a long time cause they kinda change or soemthing?? is that true or have you guys had any experience with that??
Also enermal bottles look so small can it even last painting one body??

spelled ENAMEL* ;)
well, just like every paint, if it sits too long, it will drain out from the thinner, so the paint goes to the bottom and thinner stays at the top. I shake all of my bottles from time to time, but still some of them where sitting for too long, and sometimes i need to take a toothpick and mix all the paint at the bottom.

Btw, how long is long?
Say mine, I have a couple of enamels in bottles which I rarely use and some which I havent touch for like 3mths and just recently I opened 1 and apart from the normal stirring, everything's fine.

Dont know about periods more than 3mths though. Any seasoned modelers can answer that?

Long as in long long cause like i don't model unless in holiday and stuff cause one takes too long and lots of equipments settign up. So like half a year??
Also does anyone here think painting with acrylic out of the bottle is a bit too thick and should be thin down first...... i know i should use airbrush but if its just a tiny piece i don't want so much trouble....
And one last thing so if its going to be used for hand brushing adding thinner before using the paint won't hurt it or make it dull or turn it weird??
heheheh stilll a newbie i have a lot to ask :jumpie:
