A clunking sounds coming from the rear when engaging gears is usually alright, as long its not that loud or severe. It is normal too a degree. Since I cannot hear exactly how lound the clunking is, I really cannot say if its a problem of not. But yes though, a small clunk when changing gears is alright.

A load cluck is not normal there is 1 of 2 things that can be the problem here.
1st check your universal joints for play as this is most likely the clunk.
2nd is your transmission is going bad and your sunshell gear is starting to fail as this was my first indication with my tranny just before it died and the sunshell broke.
How many miles are on your trucks?
There so some degree has to make some sound when putting it in gear but not a loud clunk.

It has 70000Km now....it does it when putting it in gear,or going into reverse.
Had it checked at GM dealer that sold it to me but they say its normal....I dont really think it is..
Put truck on alignment lift at work and check joints...no looseness...

I hate to say this but it sounds like the sunshell gear is going out, mine was starting to make a loud clunk just before it broke and I mainly heard it when I was putting it in reverse. I heard this sound for 3 months and 1 day I put it in reverse and heard a real loud clunk then the truck wouldn't move. Mine when out at 80,000 miles witch I thought was way too soon. Do a Google search on sunshell 4l60e and the beast witch is what I had put in mine. After I had the tranny rebuilt when you put it in gear you can barely hear it.
