2000 GP GTP fuel pump

I have a 2000 gp gtp w/122,000 miles on it, for the past week it has been hard starting, meaning it would crank for a long time before starting. today it stalled and was extremly hard to start. Now it just cranks and does not start at all, I noticed the fuel pump was not priming when the key is first turned on as it did previously. I did carefully check the shrader valve on the fuel rail for pressure (or fuel presence) and found no pressure. Could it be a relay? I did have the resistor replaced about 3 years ago. If it is the pump how hard is it to replace? How can I check this out to pinpoint my problem. HELP,PLEASE I AM UNEMPLOYED AND DON'T HAVE A LOT OF EXTRA CASH TO BLOW. THANK YOU!!

You can swap the fuel pump and fuel pump speed control relays to rule out a relay. Next step would be to check to see if voltage is at the fuel pump electrical connector at fuel pump prime. If the fuel pump is bad then refer to the following link for replacement.

how do i swap out the relays?? where are they?

The fuse box BNaylor is talking about is the one that is in the engine compartment, on the passenger side. It is the black box that is mounted to the strut tower. The relays are in sockets and just pull out from the position in the fuse box.

The relays are #15 (fuel pump speed control) and #14 (fuel pump). See pic below. 15 is marked in the pic. 14 is right above 15 and are identical relays. Just get a good rip on the respective relay and carefully pull up and out.

I just swaped the relays and still no fuel pump activation. My question is this , should I purchase the whole assembly or the kit with just he pump? I am not sure how involved the rebuild kit is. Secondly I read that the tank should be at 1/4 full or less, to change out the pump,is that an important issue?

Dont worry about how full the tank is.

Removal and replacement of the pump is about the easiest ever. Just remove the trunk carpet and you will be able to get at the pump.

I found the part at a local parts shop for around $250.00 . Is there a big difference in quality versus the dealer part, I mean that could be about $200.00!

I dont think I would put an aftermarket pump in there... even though AC Delco quality has been going down the drain lately.

As mentioned in another post, if you change the pump, its probably a good idea to change the fuel filter at the same time.

Stay away from Airtex and/or Master brand aftermarket pumps, they are JUNK. Carter makes a decent pump, but they don't stand behind them. Try to stick with AC-Delco or Delphi if you can get one resonably priced. The only other aftermarket I would consider using is Fineline. They are based out of Canada and use OEM quality parts.

I was able to get a Carter pump for around $240.00 at a local supplier, it is backed with a 1 year warranty, I am strapped for cash right now, had I been working I would have opted for the Delco part. Thanks a million for everyone's input and help, greasing the o-ring really helped snap the pump in. It was a little difficult, but since I have the pass thru that made it easier. One thing that helped was when installing I seated the rear facing end of the pump first and kind of "snapped" the forward facing portion of the pump in. This took about 5-10 minutes. Again thanks to all that helped!
