Hello all im having some issues with my grand am.
First i will list what all parts are new on the vehicle.
New coil packs + housing
New spark plug boots
New cat + muffler
New Timing Chain, gears, guides.
Ok now for my problem.
My tachometer isint smooth when accelerating, its erratic
I believe my Timing Tensioner is bad because i can hear the chain
rattleing while driving.
Car idles like crap, and when im stoped at red lights, car idles like crap and bounces really bad.
Is this a problem with my timing being slightly off???? and the tensioner not tight????
Or is there another culpret i should look into???
Thanks

Welcome to AF !!
You said you have replaced the timing gears, chain, and guides.
I wouldnt think any of those components would be bad already.
From what you're describing sounds like an IAC problem.
If you havnt, try removing it and cleaning the IAC and its port. Usualy carbons up pretty bad and will cause simular issues with idle.
Here is a link for the IAC

Well i got a used IAC from the local pull a part, but i was having this issue before then. I will try cleaning it and testing with an ohm meter. I will be back with results

tested with ohm meter, both sides read 48ohms. Took iac out and got 20qtips of carbon out. Did not take tb off and clean the underside. Took 4 a test drive and tach is still erratic but not as bad. Stopping car goes from 1500rpms down to 900 and car is still bouncy.

Have you tried checking for any trouble codes , if so what were they ?
It's best to pull the TB and clean out the underside and back of the TB butterfly. You wouldnt believe how much something so small could effect your engine.
Other then that you could have a vacum leak, especialy around the intake manifold.
Could also be the EGR leaking(or other emissions components faulty), if this modle has one, clogged PCV, clogged or dirty injectors.
Hope that helps
ps- it should idle around 650rpms
