I am planning on replacing my 1998 2dr Z71 Tahoe's starter this coming weekend. The motor sounds like it's on it last legs and I am giving it maybe 15 more starts before its completly shot. I'm handy but I have not replaced a starter before and figured you guys could give me some good tips on how to do this project. Thanks for the help!!

Go a brand New over rebuilt starter.
Un hook battery before replacing.

I wanted to write back and let everyone know that I ended up replacing my starter last weekend on my 1998 Chevy. It took me a little bit less than 30 minutes to complete the repair. I tested the old Napa starter on O'Reily's machine before I bought the replacement and it turned out that my starter was arching. It actually torqued during the test and threw the ground off. Good thing I replaced it before I got stranded. I did have one more question after the fact. When I was at the store the man working the parts counter asked me if I wanted a direct drive starter or the gear reduction starter. Me not knowing which would work better went with the direct drive. Does anyone know if one works better than the other? Hind sight is always 20/20 so lets hope I made the right move. Thanks for the help.

What kind of starter did it have on it?

Always go back with what it had on it.

Did you go the brand new or just a rebuilt?

According to the Manager at O'Reily's it looked to be a direct drive. The reason I asked is due to the fact that this new starter sounds different from the previous starter if that makes sense. I went with a rebuilt starter with a lifetime warranty. It set me back about $100 including tax. I highly recommend this DIY fix to any newbie.

Engine code will tell you if it takes a direct drive or geared starter.
O'rielly has brand new starters form 85.49 to 104.49$
Whar kind of noise is it making?
If replacement starter is making noise may need shimed.
Did you read the installation instructions.?
Any shims come with starter?
Did you old one have any shims?
Was your flywheel chewed up any?

the original starter has a number stamped on it ...using that number you search the internet for the correct starter to use....unless you go to the dealership and pay 300.oo for the correct oem starter....

I have had problems with these aftermarket starters as they are of the wrong fit or just wrong....

before installing you must make sure they are the same ...The new starter hardware before installing must be checked for proper torque....

always disconnect the neg battery terminal before any work is started...

I use a/c delco or USA INDUSTRIES starters,,,since I have used these I have had not to shim any of the installed motors and they last a long time...

since its a lifetime warrantee if the starter is not correct get another that is,,,,noises that are different from original as mt 2500 stated may mean that the starter is not engaging the flywheel correctly...

this can damage your flywheel teeth...remove flywheel cover/starter and check for damage...then check for gap of 1/8inch between the starter gear teeth and flywheel teeth,,,
