Stupid Question no one Can Answer

Ok, we're all feeling mental over here cause none of us know the correct term for a part...

You open your gas tank door, you get the gas pump and take it to your car and put it into ____ which pours gas into the car's gas tank through said ____...

Whatever that external part is physically called (i still say its the nozzle, but I don't even know anymore lol) it's rusted out on our 97 GP SE, 3.8L.

Any idea on what its call and/or how to aquire said part to replace said rusty one would be great because getting rust into ones gas tank can't be good.

Is that the terms you are looking for?
If so the easiest thing to do would be to purchase a new gas tank, ( or a clean used one if available.)

GM calls the metal pipe that runs from the fuel cap to the fuel tank a "fuel filler pipe". (GM part #10293612). It includes the filler pipe, the vent pipe, and the part that the fuel cap screws into as an assembly. There are also two short pieces of rubber hose that go from it to the actual tank itself. The vent hose is GM#10298958, the filler hose has an early and late change, depending on the last 6 digits of your VIN#.

1st design, VIN# 238197 and earlier is GM#10400763
2nd design, VIN# 238198 and later is GM#10407127

A note of caution. I'd thoroughly check your tank for signs of rust especially along the seam and top. I've seen many of that vintage where it necessitated complete replacement due to the severe rusting on the tank. If you live in an area that uses a lot of road salt in the winter there is a good possibility there is more rust than you can see. Average lifespan of gas tanks in my area is about 8 to 9 years, and there are businesses that specialize in southern rust free used tanks, along with new aftermarket ones. Just make sure the tank is solid.

I agree Tom. There is a good chance that if the filler pipes are rusted, the tank may be also, good catch.

It's sad when I look back at all the stuff I've had to replace on my vehicles over the years that met an early end due to road salt. things like gas tanks, fuel lines, brake components,body panels, etc. And someone living in the South or West is probably still on their originals. ( Whatever the salt doesn't get the potholes will like front end components :lol: )

Oh yeah, Michigan's road commissions love Salt!!! There were multiple times this winter the salt trucks would go by throwing salt everywhere with their blades up. You gotta love driving in 6" of greasy slush!

Thank you for the part numbers, that is fantastic. Thank you all for your responses. I was considering replacing the tank to, and it makes sense esp. since your constantly pushing the pump against the filler to get it in to fill the gas, so your gaurenteed to knock some rust in with it.

Car used to be driven in Ontario which uses sand/salt content for snow removal, you should see the underside of the car its just a nightmare.
