Pulled engine, no spark, 1984 d-150 ram!

I bought an engine off a guy, running condition when pulled out of another truck. It's a 1983, 5.2L v8.
I've been trying to get it to start with it out but having problems getting a spark.. I'm trying to start it off my battery with power going to positive wire on starter, positive on ignition coil, grounded to engine block, and just crossing the negative on starter over to get it to turn.
I cant get a spark though, not even getting one at the wire going into the cap and rotor from the ignition coil.
I took a working ignition coil out of my truck to swap and see if that was it, but getting the same problem, no spark.
Am I hooking up the power wrong to this pulled engine, or any ideas on why I cant get a spark!? Getting a bit dissapointed so far with this one.
Any tips would be great!
