DIY to Test Rad Fans?

Sorry to reveal how much of a noob I am with this but I have tended to refrain from repairing electrical issues myself, leaving them to a mechanic. Is there a detailed DIY (with pictures if possible) to test my rad fans? PROBLEM: I have a 2000 Silhoulette and I don't recall hearing the fans coming on ever since I bought the van almost 2 years ago. The temp gauge went over the half way point for the first time last week so I'm worried that the fans don't work at all. ANY suggestions would be appreciated.

turn on the a/c this should turn 1 fan on.your system may not be hot enough at mid needle.let it run until the 225-240 mark keeping an eye on it.

UPDATE: I ran the van this morning for about half hour with the a/c on. When I turned the a/c on the fan(s) did not come on. The temp. needle stayed at 1/4 or just a smidgen above. After about 20 mins. one fan came on, the one on the passenger side. It ran for maybe 20 seconds then shut off. It did that a few times. Should it stay running as long as the a/c is on?
I'll be doing some running around today so I'll try to get it hotter. I read in another post that the fans don't really come on until the needle is between 1/2 and 3/4 (226 F/108 C). Its only hit that once in 2 years and that was last week.
