have replaced fuel filter, fuel pump, sprk plugs, o2 sensor, checked inertia switch, fuel pump does run car will not fire up, if i spray starting fluid in throttle body it fires, but seems to back fire thru throttle body. car sat for @ 18 months, also has new battery any ideas other than pushing it off a cliff?

Welcome to AF!!

Was the car running when it was parked? Check the timing on the car to make sure that it is correct as the timing belt may have jumped timing. A compression check would be a good way to check for things like bent valves etc. If you have very low compression the car won't run. This may be why the car is backfiring through the throttle body. Also are you sure you are getting good fuel pressure? The pump may be running but it may not be generating enough pressure to run the car so check the fuel pressure at the fuel rail.

according to the manual we purchased, there is suppose to be a place at the end of the fuel rail to check the pressure, bur we cannot find any such fitting anywhere on the fuel rail. i did read that the fuel pump control module is what determines the pressure, but can't find that either! car was running before we change the fuel filter and did an oil change, then everything went to crap

Did you notice the arrow on the fuel filter showing which way the flow goes?

When you turn the key to the 'on' position can you hear the fuel pump?
Just wondering how you know it is working.
When you replaced the filter was the old one full of fuel or was it dry?

If you are certain you have spark and your fuel pump is working....

1. Your injectors are clogged
2. A sensor, such as the crank sensor, is unplugged
3. You don't have compression.

Of those options, I would say that after sitting 18 months, the injectors are clogged.

Oh yes.... and make sure you put the filter on the right way, as mentioned. It's a one way valve.

Make sure you fuel pump is running. Just have some one turn the key and listen inside the gas cap. You will hear it if it is running. If it is not you will have to check for power back there. Also check for power at the cut off swith. you should have power in and out of that switch when key is turned on. If all checks good I would check timing.

i appreciate all the help so far. the fuel filter is in the right way. when i turn on the key you can hear the fuel pump start for @ 30 secs. i hooked a hose to the outlet of the filter and cranked the motor, fuel flows but not with alot of pressure. does anyone know what the fuel pump driver modle does? i read in the manual that it somehow controls the speed of the fuel pump depending on load on the motor. if so how do i test this piece?

30 seconds is way too long. SOunds like the pump is working but not working well... pressure should build after just 3 seconds or so. You might need a new pump.
