I have had this problem for the past few months. It seems that the Throttle body rubber tube collaps and enventully fails with a big hole in the tube. On my third one noww. I have checked eveything under the sun to find the cause it seems the engine wants a lot more air than the thottle body can give it. My Mech. is stunned. any suggestions as to what this may be?

i would find it hard to believe that your engine would run if it was intaking so much air as to collapse the tube. sounds to me like something is making it very very hot to the point where it is causing the matterial to fail. is there any coolant lines that run near it or anything that could give off a lot of heat? is your engine running really warm?

Thanks you for your reply,
Since then I have gone through 2 more bellows tubes. we have done everthing under the sun to try and figure it out. As for any heat isssues the car has bever had any overheating issues that I know of. water and thermostat changed. As for a fix what we did was put a 2" steel pipe cut to exact lenght of the tube and inserted the pipe inside the tube and reinstalled the tube. no more problems with the tube. the car car ran real welll for a while and now is bogging down and hard starting. never ending story.

is your air filter new? or if it isnt new is it atleast pretty clean?

is there something blocking the air box outlet tube?

not only will heat ruin those but extreme vibration could also cause it to fail.

could the metal pipe have shifted in the tube blocking air flow?

Is your CEL (Check Engine Light) on?

The tube would even collaps with the with the air box open and air filter removed. I have checked for blockage from one end to the other, even had the intake removed and checked. as for the steel pipe it is cut to exact lenght and since I have had it installed it has not moved a bit. the strangest part is the car has not put out any codes. one thing i did not mention is sometimes the car has a hard time starting, i would have to give it gas to get it going and after it starts there is a strong fuel smell only for a few seconds. again changes plugs, wires, tried different fuel.
I have talked to a couple of dealers and they have never seen this problem before.

You could try changing your coolant temp sensor. when mine went it showed the car was running proper temp and would kick the rad fans on at the correct times but ran poor at idle and smelled of gas. also when driving it seemed like i was towing another neon off of every stop.

its about $25 at autozone and is easy to install.
