Is It Best To Replace The Battery

when you replace the starter??

i need a new to put in a new starter because my old one is going bad because of the oil from my oil leak getting into it..then i was told i would need to take my motor out to fix the oil leak and all the other leaks :crying:

I've never really replaced a battery when I replaced a starter, but my batteries at the time of starter replacement were fairly new or in good shape. How old is the battery? You could test it to see it's condition and make your decision based on that info.

not sure how old it is...it came with the car..and ive had the car for a yr..then i do have a system being ran off of it also..im going to call around a price a used battery..this car is costing me so much money all at once..

Yeah that happens now and then when cars get this old. It could be worse though, you could have a high car payment every month.

:uhoh: You mean Wal Mart's Neverstart batteries ? I used to buy them all the time until qa few years ago I couldn't get any of them to make it to a a year or so in any of my vehicles. Luckily they were covered under their warranty, but that's not the point. The point is having to take it out of your car, take it into the store, wait in line, have them call someone to test the battery to confirm the battery is indeed bad( which can be funny to watch the associate who obviously has never used the battery tester before), get the new battery, and go back home and reinstall it , then go through the whole procedure in 9 to 12 months.The amount of money "saved" by buying a battery there is quickly lost in time/labor consumed getting it replaced.
I'm not a big fan of used batteries myself as you don't know the history of the battery but for some people it may be their only option. A word of advice on buying used batteries is to make sure you know what the warranty is on it and save your receipt in case you need to take it back.

Used battery is NOT the way to go!

Neither is a walmart battery. You'll be lucky if you get over a year out of one. In stead of "ever Start" they should call them "never start". Most of the battery cores we have are either walmart brand or werker (batteries Plus). That should tell you something!!

I don't know where you guys get this, but Walmart batteries are either made by Johnson Controls (i.e., Autozone, Interstate), or AC/Delco. I've got one in my car now that I got two years ago. The last one I had from there lasted 4 years. The batteries I've never had much luck with are all made by Exide.

It probably doesn't matter who makes Wal Mart's batteries, It's the process or materials that go into the batteries that make them inferior to the competition. I've read articles about how Wal Mart tells suppliers they need to trim production costs in order to make their products less expensive to purchase. As a result, many companies looking to cut costs end up cutting corners either in material or workmanship. There are a lot of products out there that aren't the quality they once were. I wouldn't be surprised if the battery manufacturer used different materials or other methods while producing the batteries for Wal Mart. It's a fact of life in business now, everything is about the bottom line and profits are all they seem concerned about, consumer be damned,(and this isn't all Wal Mart either.) Look at A C Delco oil filters, once one of the best in the industry, now relegated to the bottom of the quality pile due to GM's outsourcing of production.
I still shop at Wal Mart, but do not buy everything there as I have found out over the years what is good and what isn't, batteries included :lol; even the small engine battery's quality has greatly decreased over the years, and I no longer buy them at WM either.)

:runaround: yes the ones made by JC are the MAXX yellow batteries... which were the good ones

the cheaper versions of never-start are made by either exide or delphi...

i don't get the cheaper versions, just the MAXX ones which lasted 6 years in one of my vehicles

ps: i also look at the date codes to find the "freshest" one on the shelf; sometimes they don't rotate their stock

I have used the walmart batteries,,,but the last time I needed one was 6yrs ago....the batteries then were better than sears diehard which I had used a long time ago..

so the walmart batteries so far last for me 6-7yrs...
the sears batteries all failed suddenly....the internal connection to the neg post broke....on every one at 4yrs...

exide batteries it is reported to not last long...

thats why when sears batteries die, they "Die Hard" im sticking with advance auto's batteries

well i got a used battery from interstate batteries...something temporary until I can afford the $100 battery...so far so good..but I know it wont last very long..after all i only paid $30 for it..

are the batteries at auto zone and advance auto pretty good? i believe i saw one in there for about $80-$90...

Yeah, the batteries at Auto Zone are good. Found this site to research battery options: http://www.cheapcarbatteriesguide.com/ . Then I went to auto zone and bought one for about $100 with tax. It's lasted for 5 years so far.

So far so good!

What about the Optima batteries?
They are supposed to be good but a little pricey.

I love Optima batteries and won't run anything else. Yes, hey are expensive, but I like the fact that they do not leak.

No matter what battery you buy, or where you buy it from, always charge it before putting it in.
