the ABS light in my son's 04 Explorer comes on at random times. Is there a way to check for stored codes on these? On his old 91 Explorer there was a wire you shorted for a flash code.

Your title indicates it's the SRS light that's on. The SRS light is the Supplemental Restraint System light, or airbag light. That is different from the ABS light indicated in the body of your post. Which one comes on? Does it appear to be flashing a code? The SRS light will typically flash out a 2-digit code. If it's not flashing, but just on, then for either system you'll need a professional scan tool to read out the codes.

WOW, talk about a brain f@rt!!!! It is the ABS light. They also have a little BMW 318I that has an ongoing SRS issue...we were talking about that while I was typing, LOL.
As I understand it the ABS light comes on once in a while, if the truck is shut off and re started it goes away. A random thing but they are concerned.

For that they'll need to get the ABS computer scanned using a scan tool which can access the ABS system. Typically this requires a professional scan tool. Actron has a new stand-alone ABS scan tool but it has somewhat limited compatibilty.
From the description of the issue, it sounds like one of the wheel speed sensors may be cracked or there may be debris between a tone ring and the sensor. They could try closely inspecting all four tone rings and sensors with bright lighting in lieu of having access to an appropriate scan tool.
