2001 door lock problem

My 2001 Taurus that I just bought has a weird problem. When I start the car and drive away all the door locks make noise and the door button moves but not all the way down or up. Sometimes they will all lock normally but not often. If I use the door button they all make noise and mostly the drivers door is the only one that unlocks or locks. I get the same thing if I use my remote. I even get the horn chirp that tells me the car is locked but it's not. And a peculiar note- The PRNDL does not light up in the dash cluster. Could that affect the locks? Shouldn't the locks work no matter what gear I'm in? I've degreased and sprayed the door locks to make sure they don't stick but it made no difference. I've checked every fuse also. Like I said they will work SOMETIMES. Any ideas out there? Thanks

Do the locks seem to bind if you use the key in the key cylinder? It sounds like the linkage may be binding. Have anyone been into the doors recently for body work or maybe to replace a power window regulator?
