The ABS light in my '01 Grand Prix GT always comes on shortly after I start it up, and at the same time the ABS light comes on, the traction control shuts off ("Trac Off" lights up) and will not turn on. Brakes work fine

u should bring it to a dealer and have it scanned for abs codes. i have the same problem with my 2002 gtp. anytime your abs light comes on im pretty sure it also turns traction off as well. do you hear any grinding or humming coming from your wheel bearings? a bad sensor can make the light come on. another problem with these cars is the electronic brake control module going bad. best thing to do in that case would b to locate your local salvage yard and get a used unit because they get pretty expensive. but i would start at getting it scanned first.

get it scanned with an ABS capable scanner and see what codes it gives you. most likely going to be a bad wheel bearing though.

i had the same problem. Took the car and had the abs scanned
only cost 25 dollars. Had acode for right front wheel sensorwas bad.got on the buick century forum.found a thread telling how to test the sensor with a voltmeter. The sensor tested good.checked the wires comeing to the sensor had one of the two wires broke into about 12 to 15 inches back up the harness from the sensor. Hope this will help you.

I will try and find that thread and post it. To check the sensor just take the wheel offso you can get to the sensor plug easier. Set voltmeter to 20k onthe ohms.unplug sensor when you unplug it there will be two contacts sticking up in the sensor side. Put the leads from the voltmeter on the contacts. You should get areading of 1k if the sensor is good. Hope this helps good luck

I belive it is the sensor, get very low reading on the voltmeter (In the Miliohms) on the sensor, turned the key to run and got 4.8 Volts on the wires, and could not find any bad spots all the way into the engine compartment, now just gotta find a reasonably priced used sensor/hub assembly

Yeah I think I have the same problem. Could someone post the part number he is talking about and how hard is it to do by myself?

The part being referred to is the complete hub assembly which also has the ABS wheel sensor.
Check out our Tips & Maintenance subforum. We have a few threads posted on how to replace a hub. I'm getting ready to do one myself on my GTP this weekend. I went with the AC Delco replacement hub but the part number will vary depending on the year of your Grand Prix. The clips are different where they connect to the electrical connector.
So what year is your GP?

I have a 97 GrandPrix GT. It would be great if you can put the part number and the length it would take a mechanic to install for labor purposes.

The GM part number is 12429204, Delco part number 20-17.
It will vary. Probably 1.0 to 2.0 hours since it includes removing brake components. According to the Mitchells repair guides .9 hours just for the hub.
