trans & speedometer?

Hello, I have a 98 expedition 5.4L, rwd. The other day I changed the battery connectors, and the truck ran fine for a day. The next day i go to drive it, and the transmission feels like its in some kind of "limp mode". (like it only shifts into 1st and 3rd gear) And the speedometer and odometer have stopped working. Everything else on the dash works, gas gauge, battery gauge, etc. except the speedometer and odometer. I was wondering what would cause this. I hoping it is a short or blown fuse, and not time for a tranny rebuilt. Any help would be appreciated.
