I have A 1993 Ranger w/a 4.0 and A 5 speed it was jumping out of first gear unless I held it in when taking off, and now it is stuck in 3rd. gear, is this something I can fix with A rebuild kit or is this something more extensive

I would start by checking the clutch master cylinder, is it leaking, did it run low on fluid and get air in the line. is there something blocking it from moving all the way when pushed a stick broken off at the slave cylinder area. is the transmission full of fluid there is a place to put it in on the side of the tranny. does this truck have a lot of miles on it . has it been slipping before these other problems started

The truck has 245,000 miles it happened when I accelerated around A car in 3rd gear and no matter what I did it wouldn't come out, it has been jumping out first gear since about 235,000 and the clutch resevoir goes down so I check it often and add when needed so I don't think any air got in the line, it started jumping out of 3rd when I went to the black hills and going up A pretty steep incline, I just found out this morning that A friend of mine that the truck was parked at pulled the tranny last night, so I was thinking about putting A rebuild through it, do you think that this could fix the problem or do you think that it sounds more like something with the slave? Can't really afford A rebuild and don't wan't to get A used one as I could end up with more problems

I assume you can't get it out of gear even with the engine stopped. There's nothing wrong with your clutch or slave. You have a transmission problem. Even if you can get it out with the engine stopped, 1st gear popping out is a tranny problem, not the clutch. Get one at the junk yard, this problem is not going to go away without rebuild or replace. Good luck.

That is correct it wouldn't come out when decelerating the engine or with the engine off, I pulled the shifter cause someone told me that if the shifter gets bent it will do that also and it didn't look bent so that is why I stopped where I was at, thanks for the replies.

I thought that I read somewhere that A two wheel drive tranny will work but would have to change the output shaft do you know if this is true.
