Service engine soon light on.

I HAVE 2005 CHEVY EQUINOX LS AND THE SERVICE ENGINE SOON LIGHT IS ON AND I BROUGHT IT TO THE REPAIR SHOP TODAY AND HE ABLE TO GET IT TO TURN OFF. BUT IT CAME RIGHT BACK ON. HE SAID IT HAD SOMETHING TO DO WITH ( evap) HE ALSO SAID IT COULD EVEN BE A BAD GAS CAP.:screwy: ANY IDEAS WOULD BE GREAT. THANKS JACK

Mine has the same problem. Mechanic said code is large vacuum leak. Said it was probably the gas cap. I haven't replaced mine yet, but intend to. If I do before you & it works, I'll post it up. ~ Jon

THIS CAR RUNS FINE IF I WASN'T SELLING IT I WOULD DRILL A HOLE IN IT AND PUT IT OUT ! :tongue: THANKS FOR THE REPLY JON! JACK T.

Jack, I think any cap that would seal the tank would work. You will have to disconnect the battery for a few minutes to cancel the code & then keep your fingers crossed. On second thought, if a cap from a dealer wasn't too much, I might go that way. Jon

On second thought, if a cap from a dealer wasn't too much, i might go that way. Jon jon i went to advance auto part and bought a new gas cap. ( slant part # 11841 no strap on it to hook to door. Oh well $15.59 then they plugged the scanner in and it all passed. So i guess that fixed the evap problem that was coming up on scanner. But the service engine soon light is still on. I took the positive cable off the battery and waited 15 minutes and yes it is still on? I hate to have to bring it to the dealer! Any thoughts anyone? Thanks jack

At the driving school I was working at, the check engine light always stayed on in one vehicle, the mechanics said nothing was wrong. so we would just tell the student not to worry about it. ( they get very concerned.) Sometimes there is just a defect in the sensor that makes it come on when nothing is wrong with the engine or exhaust system.

IT WAS THE GAS CAP. HOPE YOURS IS THE SAME. I ALSO HAD A PROBLEM WITH MY REMOTE STARTER AFTER I PULLED THE BATTERY CABLE. IT WOULD TRY TO START THREE TIMES AND WOULD NOT. BROUGHT IT TO A PLACE THAT INSTALLS REMOTE STARTERS AND THEY REPROGRAMED IT. FIXED THAT PROBLEM. $65.00 ALSO THE PASSLOCK LIGHT WAS ON SINCE MY DAUGHTER HAD SOMEONE PUT THE REMOTE IN. (mikey mouse) I BOUGHT A BYPASS KIT FOR IT. $69.00 OUT WENT THE LIGHT. WE ALSO JUST DID BRAKES/ROTERS/FRONT LEFT BEARING HUB. SO WE PUT LIKE $600.00 INTO IT. SEE YA JACK GOOD LUCK
