What parts should I put on my 1998 eclipse gs?

So I just got my first car, a 1998 mitsubishi eclipse gs (5 speed) and I was wondering for the average 17 year old what should I do first.

I was planning to get aftermarket spark plugs, spark plug wires, and fuel injectors. Could you please recommend me a good brand and type..and how many cc's should I go on the injectors? (don't plan on turboing it)

I was also thinking of the throwing in an AEM V2 intake. Maybe some dc headers and no idea for the exhaust. I want my car to be loud-ish and noticed..but not by the whole neighborhood/cops. Do you know when some kid throws some crappy exhaust on his car and it sounds like a gas scooter? PLEASE don't let me be that kid. I would appreciate all and any guidance you could give. THANKS!

First, Welcome to AF!

Before you mod the car at all do maintanence work. This would include changing oil, plugs, wires, fuel filter, I would also recommend removing the TB and cleaning it good. Also run some sea foam threw the motor and it should be running great by then. Make sure the timing belt doesn't need to be changed.

Go with BKR6e plugs and just get some replacement wires from the parts store. They work just as good as any. You dont need to upgrade injectors. The engine must run at the correct AFR (air fuel ratio) at all times. So unless you add more air i.e. forced induction, you dont need any more fuel.

For starter mods I would recommend getting a cheap ebay intake. The AEM one is a waste of money. All it is is a metal pipe and filter. Go with a header and cat back from ebay as well. These are parts where its ok to use knock off ones. Also an UDP (under drive pulley) would be a good upgrade. That will make the car a good bit quicker.

Hey man thanks a lot! I've been looking on ebay and I've seen some stuff I like. What parts does a full exhaust system consist of? Headers...muffler. whats in between? I'd like to buy 4-1 headers and need to know what comes after that. How is the N1 exhaust?

A full exhaust consist of a header (we only have 1), downpipe, cat converter and a cat-back (which includes the muffler too). Depending on where you're at you may not need a cat if you don't have emissions. In that case, most people just add a straight pipe. BUT, with no cat, your car will be extremely loud.

This was my car with a full exhaust (with cat) on the dyno. You're would sound similar, minus the lumpyness at the low rpms because this one had a built head on it.

But like Silvr said, do maintence first as that's the most important thing you can do to start off and keep doing the entire life of the car.

Cool thank you. Maintenace is being done as we speak lol. Would this be a good exhaust and does it have a catalytic converter?

Looks like you'll still need a cat.

Also with that header, try to stay away from the kind that 'pop' into the downpipe. I heard those leak really bad. Try to find one that has a 2-bolt flange instead.

Hm, how do I know it's a 2 bolt flange. I've been looking online and I can't find it in the description...what is it exactly?

Look at the picture. Where the DP connects to the header will have a 2 bolt flange there

The one you posted has a slide in and connect deal instead of a flange. Basically the header just fits into the downpipe and then snaps closed. Never heard of those making a good seal. The 2-bolt flanges have a gasket in between and if done right, forms a tight seal.

I'll try to find one for you later if I remember.

Ohh I get it. So is this what you mean?...I can't find that though...do they make 4-1 headers with a 2 bolt flange for the 4g63?

Ya I'm confused on what you're saying. You have a 420a.

I'm talking like this for your car.
Header itself (http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/1995-1999-Mitsubishi-Eclipse-Talon-RS-GS-4-1-HEADER-96_W0QQitemZ110334497684QQcmdZViewItemQQptZMotors_ Car_Truck_Parts_Accessories?hash=item110334497684&_trksid=p4506.c0.m245&_trkparms=72%3A1205%7C65%3A12%7C39%3A1%7C240%3A131 8)

Doing a quick search I didn't see any full packages with the 2-bolt flange. I would personally buy the header I shown, and then piece something together. Like I said, I don't trust that pop-in deal.

thanks! ohh idk...I thought the 4g63 was the 2g gs engine without a turbo..and the 4g63t is with the turbo

95-99 RS, GS, ESi = 420a All non-turbo
95-99 GST, GSX, TSI = 4g63 (can add a 'T' if you want too)
95-99 Spyder = 4g64 non-turbo

Actually its the 96-99 Spyder GS that came with the 4g64.

Im just harassing you :p

Oh I see now...I'm learning something new every day lol. In the picture of the headers you sent me, is it just me or does the weld look a little half-assed?

david-b
04-14-2009, 08:12 AM
A little. Looks like they were done with a cheaper welder and not sealed. If you take the header and spray it with high temp sealer paint, it should make those welds last a long time. A lot of times, you get what you pay for. But I spent about $130 on my header back in the days and it held up great. Actually still in one piece and sitting unused. Hell, I'd actually be willing sell it, but you would still need a downpipe though. Easy to fab one up though.

Awesome, that's deffinitely a possibility. I just gotta finish all my maintenance work and gather up some money. I was almost done with maintenance until my car wouldn't start?? I'll post a new thread lol.....
