Recently I replaced the metal cooling pipe that comes out of the engine with the temp sensor in it. After doing so it doesn't read on the guage. Doesn't move at all So naturally I figured the sensor was bad. The guage previously would read correctly and then intermittenly just read no temp. So I figured the sensors are cheap so I put a new one in. Didn't help. Doesn't read anything again. I've checked the connection and wires with no luck. Could it be in the cluster? Or is there something else simple to check first. On a side note. The guage does move like normal when you first turn the key on.

If the gauge sweeps with the bulb check, it's not in the cluster. See what the PCM reads for ECT, it's probably a broken/shorted wire between the ECT sensor and PCM. I'm pretty sure the cluster is a module by '98, and gets all the gauge info from a serial data line, which means if other gauges are working, it's not between the PCM and cluster. I don't recall the '98s, but I had a '96 2.2L that had the coolant temp sensor in the head right by the thermostat housing. I have seen the ones you're referring to, but haven't had to do much work on them and as a result can't really think where everything is.
