Ive had my 95 chev for over a year now and ever since the service engine soon light has been on. It never had much power to begin with so i tried everything to get it to go. Replacing the air filter helped a lot, but now it either runs good or it doesn't. It will get in its spuddering moods some days and not others. Its getting so bad i can barley drive it. It also wont rev past exactly 4000 rpm because the injectors stop pumping gas then. I replaced the plugs, plug wires, and filter....
Im fed up and I dont want to pay someone 50 bucks for them to plug it onto a computer just to tell me whats wrong...
any ideas??????

Then go to Autozone or Advanced - they will plug into your computer for free

We need to know what codes you have to know where to start to advise you.

You can get the codes by jumping the A and B terminals in your truck's diagnostic ALDL connector.

From AutoZone's on-line help manual:

Once the terminals have been connected, the ignition switch must be moved to the ON position with the engine not running.

The code(s) stored in memory may be read through counting the flashes of the dashboard warning lamp. The dash warning lamp should begin to flash Code 12. The code will display as one flash, a pause and two flashes. Code 12 is not a fault code. It is used as a system acknowledgment or handshake code; its presence indicates that the ECM can communicate as requested. Code 12 is used to begin every diagnostic sequence. Some vehicles also use Code 12 after all diagnostic codes have been sent.

After Code 12 has been transmitted 3 times, the fault codes, if any, will each be transmitted 3 times. The codes are stored and transmitted in numeric order from lowest to highest [not in their order of occurence].

I've got the same truck with the 4.3. I was getting the same code. The truck would break down under load when it rained, but was better when it was dry. I tried the following:

1. EGR valve
2. EGR solenoid
3. fuel filter
4. cap, wires, rotor, plugs
5. various chemical injector cleaners

None did anything but cost me money. Somebody on this forum said they had the same problem and it was the fuel pump. Replacing the fuel pump was cheaper than buying the diagnostic equipment or paying a mechanic. It also fixed the problem.

I would check the fuel pressure before buying a fuel pump.
http://www.autopart.com/tools/toolsmain/tool/T_3430.htm This is a picture Advance or Auto Zone has loaner tools.
I've used starting fluid and richened up the mixture when running rough. If it smooths out its a fuel problem.
If you installed an aftermarket EGR make sure you read the instructions and installed correct washers. The washers control flow and excess flow will cause all kinds of problems when hot.
