Accelerating from deadstop...first gear slippage

Every so often first gear slips from a deadstop, eventually engaging with a thud. After some experimentation, I cannot replicate it when I manually drop it into first at a stop and then accelerate. Leads me to believe that the linkage needs adjustment. Is this an external adjustment, and if so, where can it be found? Thanks for any feedback.

try checking the transmission fluid, if okay, when was the last time you had the transmission service
