'99 GP/GT Instrument Cluster Problem

My 150,000 mile '99 Grand Prix GT has developed an odd problem. When the car starts everything in the instrument cluster works fine - gauges, lights, etc all correct. After about 15-20 minutes of driving all the lights on the left half of the instrument cluster go out. The gauges still work fine - just no lights. Sometimes, but not often, the left side lights will come back on after being off for 10 minutes or so. Anyone have any ideas?

Remove the IP cluster and check the connectors on the back but it sounds like poor solder contacts/joints which is common with GM IP clusters.

or loose bulbs. I think i'd replace the bulbs once i got the cluster out.

Thanks for the suggestions. I was thinking along the same line but thought I'd get at least one other opinion before I tried to do anything. Is there a procedure for removing the instrument cluster posted anywhere?

Its very simple, just remove the two bolts securing the panel above the drivers knees and pop it off. Then start at the left hand side and gently tug at the dash bezel. Its held in by snaps, you may need to angle the steering wheel downwards, and bend it a little, but it will come out, just be gently. Once its out, the IC comes out with two 7mm bolts (I believe).

I've done it so many times on GM w-body cars that it would only take me about 10 minutes.

BTW, if you are replacing the bulbs, and you want to go with ones a little brighter, you should be safe to run 168's in place of the 194's.
