wiper problems

last year i had a problem with my wipers that started randomly one day. the wipers ONLY work on the fastest setting. i had posted on here before and most people said try a new switch. i bought a used one that was "garunteed to work" and i still have the same problem. now im not sure whether i got another bad switch or theres another problem. also at one point last year around the same time, my wipers were experiencing GMs signature problem, wipers stuck upright, but that only happend occasionally and now never happens. lastly when using the wipers, in order to get them to park correctly i have to switch them off at JUST the right time or they stop in their place instead. so if anyone could somehow figure out this odd occurence please let me know thanks

with all the problems your having, i would just try replacing the whole motor assembly. someone else on here may have another suggestion for you though...

well the thing is i dont want to replace the motors or anything that doesnt need to be replaced. if it turns out that it wasnt the motor and i replaced all that id be quite unhappy. thats why im hoping that someone knows specifically what it is thats causing all this. if the motor is bad thats fine i just dont want to replace good parts

Give a look in the tips and maintenance subforum. There is a write-up about how to fix wipers that are stuck in the upright position. You can try that before buying a new motor.

its a 97 gtp.

and the wipers dont park in the upright position anymore, they only did that for a few days. now the park wherever they are when i turn off the switch, and if they are within a few inches of the parking position, but in the process of moving away from it when i switch it off they will park correctly. i dont think its exactly the same problem as the parking in the upright position that most people experience

The wiper motor circuit board is the most likely cause of your current issues. It controls speeds, delay, and park position. It is replaceable separate from the entire motor and is much cheaper. Since it's a printed circuit board, it can act up intermittently as the solder points can loosen with age.

The spring loaded cam-style crank arm and the tab on the wiper motor mounting bracket are also common causes of the park issue, but have nothing to do with speeds, nor is is common for them to intermittently work/not work.

The AC-Delco/Gm part number for the circuit board is 88958396. Dealer retail is $77.55, and if you have an AC-delco retailer in your area, you should be able to get it much cheaper. If you're thinking about going used/salvage yard, it fits all Grand Prix's 97-03, Regal/Century 97-05, Chevy Impala/Monte Carlo 00-05 and Olds Intrigue 98-02.

Good luck and let us know how it goes.

If possible, I would pull the circuit board and check for cold solder joints. That can cause intermittent problems.
