Hi,
My "MIL" light came on and the fault code was "engine coolant
temperature sensor" (G62).
At the time before I replaced the G62 sensor my car was running at a perfect 190* F with in a few minutes, running smooth, except for the light.
I replaced the sensor the light and code went back on. And was running cold below 162*F So at this point I changed the thermostat. I turned the fault code off with my obd and the mil did not gone back on.
Now my engine temp is running very cold. After about 10 minutes of driving my temp gauge will max out the 162* and that's pushing it! If I drive short distances my engine never heats up. I'm starting to feel the problems of a cold engine, poor starting, and condesation from the tail pipe.
How do you get an to engine proper temp?
Should I replace the coolant sensor again?
Flush the system and put in Volkswagan G12 coolant, right now I'm using all make Prestone coolant?
Ajdusting a theromsat?
Any other advice?

what temp thermostat did you put in? they do sell a 160 degrees thermostat for your car. is it possible you put a lower temp thermostat it. Original thermostat is 190 degrees or 195 degrees.
are the rad fans running at all? make sure they arnt running all the time or turning on early.
if you leave it in park and let it run for awhile does the temp get above 162 degrees?

I went to the dealership real VW parts both temperature sensor and thermostate. The sensor cost about $11 more at $28 and the Thermostate cost twice as much as the aftermarket part from advanced auto parts at $31.
The engine is running smooth! Cleaned the engine out an oil detergent to get rid of any gunk that may have built up!
The Moral of the story,
If Code PO118 goes off. . . replace with VW parts,not aftermarket parts.

I think you should write the manufacturer of the aftermarket sensor. Did they give you your money back for it at the store? If not maybe the manufacturer will. Even if not maybe this is something they need to look into and may save someone else the same problems if they get there act together. Maybe it was just a fluke though and the one you got just happened to be bad but it may be alot of them like that, you never know.

I always go with VW dealerships parts when repairing. VW's are very special if you know what I mean. I have been able to haggle for parts and tools at my dealership. When buying parts always ask (Is that the best price?). They have always reduced my price on parts. Good luck!
