Timing Belt Question, 2

Guys -- Many thanks for your comments. I have a 1990 Civic SI. The timing belt broke. Now:

There is no damage to the valves or to the pistons. New: battery, starter motor, alternator & belt, timing belt, water pump, fuel filter, oil filter and distribuor coil. The oil was flushed.

The timing belt was put properly but the engine pinged badly thereafter -- lots of power however. Retarding the timing fully did not resolve the problem. Moving the timing belt one tooth, resulted in it being 18 degrees retarded (according to the smog check folks). Also it then has very little power. Failed the smog test (they did not formally test it).

I am running out of ideas as to how to proceed. Thanks again. Frank (akilo55)

4G4D -- Many thanks -- you are probably correct -- the power is not good. The compression tests were; 180, 180, 180, 210 (1 thru 4). We'll adjust the valves.

I would put the timing belt back and adjust your valves. Sounds like a valve came out of adjustment.

Just out of curiosity, they didn't have to re-surface the head did they? That would raise the compression giving more power but it might ping on the same gas.

Hi -- actually, the timing belt was off by one tooth, when we fixed this everything was OK. No damage to the valves (all close to normal when adjusted). Replaced a lot of stuff -- battery, alternator, water pump, starter motor, distributor coil, air filter, spark plugs, idler roller & timing belt. It runs well and passed the smog test.
