Okay so I got a new switch and proceded to dig the defective switch from the steering wheel. I get it 2/3 out and it stops, so I keep pulling and finally the plug comes out of the switch. Now the plug is too far down in the wheel to plug it into the new switch. I'm afraid to pull any harder on the wire. I thought I might take the horn/center out of the wheel to see if I could free up any more wire, but I can't figure out how the center comes off. Right now I'm thinking I probably should have lived with the light out. Anyone else been through this?

What year is your truck?
If the wheel is sitting upright straight ahead posistion, at 3 and 9 positions back on the body of the wheel there is a whole on each side, stick a small flat blade in there and pry the bar that you can see, it is kinda a pain with out the tools to do them both at the same time, but you can get it by only doing on side at a time, just gotta hold your mouth right :)

The horn center will come out, IMPORTANT SAFETY INFO, unhook your battery first, as you are screwing with the airbag. Very high unlikelyhood that it would go off, but make no beans about it, you WILL get hurt if it goes off in your face. You should have enough wire to get the switch out, maybe it is bound up under the center cover like you say.

On kinda a the same note, when we would disposed of the airbags when I worked at the dealer, we had to defuse them first, SO of course, we would put em out in the lot and run about 20 foot of wire out and set em off with a 9v battery, first off, WOW, second off I'm serious man unhook the battery, I myself am guilty of usually not doing that with other stuff, but seriously take the time out, they are very violent when they deploy.

jyount - thanks for the info. I ended up taking the new switch apart and reassembling it in the wheel piece by piece. What a pain, but I finally got it in. Thanks for the reply.

OMG that must've been a pain. I thought they were plastic welded on the seems.
