'95 engines

my son blew the motor on his '95 cav, automattic,2.2l,4cyl .what other engines will fit this car? thanx

As a direct fit, only the 2.2 OHV. You can fit lots of engines in there. Seen pictures of a 4.6L northstar in a cavalier, but it's a ton of work.

The 2.2 OHV from a Cavalier or Sunfire will be the easiest and cheapest. If you were interested in upgrading, a 2.4 DOHC from a Cavalier or Sunfire is a direct swap.

Additionally, you would need the PCM for the 2.4, and I'm fairly certain that the mounts are different, which would be a fairly easy project, assuming you have some fabricating tools/ability.

Stick with the 2.2 OHV.

95-97 OHV direct swap if you keep your current wiring harness

98-02 OHV you'll be fighting with OBD-II diagnostic issues, because GM did away with an EGR for one on the newer motors.

95 2.3 DOHC Quad 4 and trans, wiring harness, PCM will bolt right in with the same engine mounts. If you have a 4t40e trans currently and the 2.3 has the same everything will bolt right up. If you have a manual you can use any transmission 95-99 from a Z24 or GT sunfire as they had an Isuzu transmission.

I think the 96-98 2.2l wiring harness it somewhat different from the '95. 96 went to obd2 with SFI, CMP sensor, heated O2S, digital EGR, downstream O2S etc. As long as the camshaft and head didn't change in 96-98, and I don't think they did, you could always get a 96-98 (and possibly even later but not sure) engine and bolt on your old parts like the intake manifold for regular EGR and single wire O2 and use your original PCM and wiring harness.
