2002 GC check engine light

I have a 2002 GC sport that passed smog but they failed it because the check engine light was on. I had that repaired and the light is off but the repair guy told me to drive it for about 20 miles and return the next day because the monitors weren't up yet.
I did that and when he checked it the next day they still weren't up so he told me to let it cool overnight, drive it for about 5 more miles and he'd check it again. The monitors still weren't up and he said I'll just have to drive it more, that eventually they would reset.
I spoke to a Dodge service guy and he said I would have to drive between 50-60 miles... 1/2 freeway, 1/2 stop and go. At this point I have aprox 30 miles but it was all stop and go, so I took it on the freeway and drove another 30 miles.
I took it back to be checked and he said 1 monitor was up but that was enough to pass smog. So I took it back to the smog place and he checked the monitors and said 1 was up but I needed 2 monitors up to pass smog.
He said he'll do my free recheck but it will fail.
Does anyone know anything about these monitors and how many must be up to pass smog in the state of California? Also, if I need to put more miles on it, how many more might I need? It's becoming quite the pain driving nowhere just to drive. The repair guy told me different make cars have different ways of resetting. I now have 90 miles since the light went off.:banghead:

I think the most important monitors are the catalyst monitor, evap monitor, and 02 sensor monitors. Most monitors will pass with what is called a drive cycle. The best way to pass the monitors is to drive your vehicle in the normal manner for about a week or so.

the dealers can usually do it on the rack with the drb

I took it back today after putting 10 more miles on it and it passed. The cat and 0 2 sensor monitors were up which was enough to pass. Thanks for your help. :wink:

drove mine for 100 miles to be safe and my van passed smog with two monitor up. i got the engine ligth on a week after the smog but by them my van was already tagged
to turn off the engine ligth i need it the cat coverter replaced.
