Now here is a tough one..... I am just stumped

Here's the back ground on my 2000 with a 5.7 Vortec.
Its been hard to start for at least 2 years. What it does is cranks at least
5-10 seconds before firing. Once started has always run great. Once in a while it will fire
within 2 seconds, like it used to years back. Doesn't seem to matter warm, or cold starts.
Once in a while it will crank for a very long time & not fire after many several attemps.
Twice now, I have checked fuel pressure & spark at this time & both are there. Then for no reason whatsoever, it will fire up.
Now, it has come to a new level, that I am hoping with your help, I can put an end to this madness. I was starting it up & it wouldn't fire. It acted a little like it was flooded, when all of the sudden it appeared to fire in the wrong cylinder, stopped the engine & broke the casing nose off the starter.
So, I replaced the starter & the same thing was happening, Crank, then fire at the wrong time & litterally stahl the starter. I pulled a plug & it was dry, Checked it for spark & it started right up again. Not flooded at all.
Could this be an ignition module, or crank position sensor? I am just stumped
BTW, Through all of this, it has never set a hard, or soft code.
Thanks for taking the time to read, & let me know your thoughts

Replace dist cap and rotor and plug wire and plugs and fuel and air filter with ac Delco stuff.
How is the fuel pressure?
Any check engine lights?

I would also agree to try the suggestion of MT-2500. Mine (1998 5.7L) would act up similar to yours but only on damp days. It would crank and act like it wanted to fire, but to no avail. It also would do that "bucking" like it was badly out of time. I almost drained the battery last Sunday trying to get it to fire. Must have sat there for thirty minutes.:frown: I layed a trouble light on the distributor cap for roughly an hour and thirty minutes. She fired right up:) I tuned 'er just this passed Saturday, with Accel plugs, wires, cap and rotor. The cap did look pretty bad inside, like it may have been getting wet. I coated everything with dielectric grease this time, actually it was MSD Spark Guard. The first test was yesterday morning, it was very damp and foggy. It fired right up. Hopefully the tune up was the answer. So IMHO,I would spend the time and money on those parts first. Good luck:)
Did you happen to notice what your weather was like when you were having these problems? Do you live in a humid climate?

Pull the dist out and look at the drive gear...most likely it is worn

Another check on the distributor gear wear is to pull the cap and try to rotate the rotor back and forth. If there is back and forth or side to side movement this could mean a distributor replacement.
