For the rear i would recommend buying the complete strut assembly by Monroe. They would be a straight forward "bolt on."
While you are changing those, i would inspect your leaf spring to knuckle pads. Most cars i seen are completely worn or missing. They sell aftermarket plastic pads that won't wear out... Moog makes them. With worn bushings it will add to your knocking noise and possibly damage the transverse spring.
Make sure you look at the spring closely and see if their are any cracks.

As for the front, you can change the struts and upper mount bushing without taking the wheels off.
If you want you can take the whole assembly off and change the lower spring seat and bearing.

Your moaning noise wouldn't come from worn struts... that would be more a wheel bearing issue.

ok thanks.. With the leaf spring knucke pads would i need to have the car completely of the ground on a lift or can it be done by jacking the rear end up. I havent looked under the car well the rear since i bought it.

You definately do not need a lift... but you will need to have the wheels off.
I would jack the car up from the center lift support (middle of the spring.) To get the spring off of the knuckle you will need another jack which will go under the spring closest to the knuckle. Use a piece of wood between the two since the spring is fiberglass and fragile.... i would only jack it up enough to get the old pad off and new pad in.... you don't want to flex it to the max.
They make a specialty tool just for this but it can't be rented anywhere.
