92 Explorer hard cranking

Hello to all. this is sorta a reprint from the wrong forum/Bronco
"I"(actually relaying info from a friend) am working on a 92 Explorer with a newly installed engine. When I/he tries to crank it, it seems as though that it is hydraulic ing. It is a distributorles 4.0 batch fuel injected engine. Will spin a few times then "lock" up. Release the key and retry, will do the same until started. When started, runs good.
Any and all help is appreciated
Blessings to all

you better replace that starter and battery, you say when it starts everything looks ok,. so, your starter might be dragging,

Sounds like a cracked/broken brush in the starter.

I had not heard of that b4, but it does sound feasible. One "phase" intermittent.
Thank you
Will post back if it is or not!

don't forget to clean the battery terminals and check or replace both cables that goes to the starter, good luck.

If you're comfortable in doing so, you can replace just the brushes in the starter for a fraction of the cost of a new starter motor.

Here is a better definition of the problem. The worker describes it as: the motor has to turn over about 20 times b4 it starts. he describes it as "nee nee nee nee nee nee nee, umph, nee nee neee neee neee" and then maybe a a start. He states that it sounds like the fuel is being injected but MAYBE no spark. It sounds like it is hydraulicing (excessive fuel that has to be compressed). It does not start everytime he cranks it. But when it does start, runs fine. Also, a "new" motor was installed prior to his services.
Again, thank you for the replies.

the starter should sound always like, na na na na na na na, like every other car,. ok,. then, in order to start it requires a few things.,.
1. when you open the key the pcm relay is turn on, sending current to the computer as to the fuel injectors, maf sensor, ignition coil , egr valve just to name a few of the important things that need to turn on, forgot to mention also sends current to the fuel pump relay, the ground is controlled by the computer, knowing this you can test if current is present on all this sensors, on the ignition coil the wire is a red-light green wire, on the rest is a red wire,. just use a common tester,

it requires fuel pressure, you need a fuel pressure gauge to test that, do not step on the gas while cranking, thats controlled by the computer (ecu or pcm), when you turn on the key the computer turns on the fuel pump for just 2 or 3 seconds then it shuts down until you crank the engine ,.

if the check engine light is off, your problem should be mechanical, no problems with sensors or actuators,

when you say your able to start the engine, it rans smoth at iddle? or do you need to step a little bit on the gas?,

if the check engine is on, don't waste your time , you computer needs to be scan for trouble codes.
