Replaced Distributor FUBAR

I'm working on the 92 Bravada from hell again. I replaced a rusted out distributor with a new one and went through the standard installation. When I try to time it, the engine runs at about a thousand RPMs when its ten or so degrees retarded. When I bring it to zero the engine stutters and quits.

Any Ideas?

The EST wire must be disconnected while adjusting the timing. It's a tan wire with a black stripe located behind the carpet on the passenger side, directly below the glove box, near the side kick panel. It's a single wire with a black connector.

Thanks, I'll give it a try when I get off work tonight.
