thunderbird vs grand prix

ok, i know that this is gonna piss a lot of ppl off, but i have heard so many arguments about this. first off, i have both a 99gtp and an 89supercoupe. i want to pu this to rest. both cars have a few mods, including pulleys. i drive these cars on a daily basis and this is the truth. i dont care about numbers, but what they actually do. my sc would beat my gtp in the 1/4 mile by a car length or more, making it the better drag car. and i know a lot of you are gonna be like, oh my gtp would kick its ass because i have all these mods. i dont care, im talking just about the same mods on both so its a fair fight. the sc hits harder to be sure, but thats where it ends. if you have to handle and turn corners and drive in anything but a straight, then the pontiac is the way to go. it just depends on what you wanna do. haha, aside from all that you just cant beat the donuts you can do in the sc.

An 89 Supercoupe really has it over a 99 gtp? Have you been to the track to really get a valid test with each car?
My GTP has smoked a number of cars. Including a V8 4th gen firbird with my current setup, and a turbo eclipse even without mods. The firbird driver was so pissed that he just spent 10-15G on a car and lost to a 4-dr sedan. The eclipse guy was a little more laid back. We lined up, When the light turned green, All I could hear was his turbo's spooling up and then blowing off when he shifted. I got him from the get go, and he didnt have a chance. When we lined up again at the next light he gave me the thumbs up.

i dont think so man...I'm not gonna argue with you either, however i know I've beat many of thunderbirds with my "SE" keeping in mind this "SE" is a top swapped L36...
we wont even talk about how many V8's my GTX has eaten up...

Not saying it is so, but I could see a modded 89 super coupe keeping up with a 99 GTP. Where the super coupe lacks in hp it has quite a bit of torque. From what I have looked at they run upper 15's but that could be turned around quickly with a boosted car...as well as the GTP could. Personally, my bet would be on the GTP but anything can happen.

Dude, GTP's run mid 14's stock quarter mile.

BTW, where did you find that 3000gt? Nice cars.
My friend has a 94 dodge stealth, 3.0 V6 DOHC twin turbo manual awd. The thing just screams! I feel like I'm driving a honda when I line up next to him. He just walks all over me.

More like mid to high 14s Tim. High 14s being typical. I've seen low 15s too depending on track conditions, weather and altitude. And the driver. :grinyes:
Of course, modded GTPs are a different issue.

Ha! Yeah, mid to high 14's and even low 15's dont suprize me Bob.
Modded GTP's are a different issue, your timeslip is proof positive.
Thinking about a set of yella terra 1.8 roller rockers and maybe one more size pully drop. What do you think?
Plus still have to order the MMS Ported and Polished LIM. The weather seems to finally be getting nice enough to be able to take my time and do a good job on my LIM gaskets.

When I finally made up my mind that I wanted another 3000GT I looked for over a year and finally found one owned buy a guy in his 40's here in Omaha. He was the original owner and took immaculate care of it and it never saw winter for its entire life. They are fun cars no doubt. A simple MBC (manual boost controller) can put you into high twelves if you can drive...though low 13's is typical. I got to take a ride in a friends VR4 who is running DR800 turbos with 500+awhp and I can honestly say I would never drive that thing out of fear. However, a properly modded GTP could definately hang with a VR4 being the race was long enough or from a roll....that's the scary thing about sleepers! Hopefully within the next year I can bolt-on some 13T's or 13G's (with supporting mods of course...fuel, etc.) and put myself in low 12's to high 11's. Until then, the VR4 is still a blast and my SL is still slow. :D
Bob: What do you think if we run the CR250R vs your GTP vs the VR4 vs the CRF450R? Quad drag FTW!
EDIT: Upon looking at your slip for you GTP I would have to have a near flawless race lol. My VR4 could pull a high 12 but a 12.6 would require some excellent driving. Noooo!
BTW Bob, what did you have in order to get a 1.8 60'? That's pretty damn solid for a FWD car.

Obviously Alex our dirt bikes are going to win if we do it off road. :grinyes:

A lot of variables but the key is racing technique, i.e. launch and physics - traction. Obviously power is a factor. But I'll let you in on a racer secret. Drag radials! My best 0-60 ft times and launches are with Nitto NT555 drag radials and ABS/traction control inhibited.

I agree that the 3000gt (and it's Dodge Stealth cousin) is a sweet car. There's a guy that runs the local Taco Bell down the street from where I work that has a red AWD Turbo with manual trans (5 or 6 sp?). It is a sweet car. He happened to be coming out one day when I was there and he proudly popped the hood. He's got some serious mods, A/M turbos, wastegates, intercooler, etc... and it is stupid fast. I believe he said mid-high 11's and it sounds sweet! Most turbo cars exhaust note sound like ass (no offense) but this one sounds downright evil! I personally believe the 3000Gt is still one of the best looking cars to ever come from Japan.
As far as the torque advantage of a T-bird SC, it can't be much. Both cars are 3.8L supercharged vehicles and the GTP motor breathes better. I'm not doubting what the OP is saying, as the Thunderchicken is a RWD car and easier to launch in a straight line.

When I said quad drag I meant that there were 4 vehicles racing...not that it would be off-road.

All of the twin turbo models were manuals. From 1991-1993 they were 5 speeds regardless if it was a manual base model or twin turbo. From 94-99 the twin turbos all had 6 speeds and the base models continued to keep the 5 speeds (assuming they weren't automatic). I would be willing to be I could find the guy on 3SI that you found at the taco bell. The vast majority of people with 3S's that are well-modded are on there...time for a search!

I know Alex. I tried to evade or side step that scenario for good reason. I don't think the bikes would prevail. :dunno:
BTW - Mine wheelies too easily on a black top.
