Tahoe rear

Threw the driveshaft and had a shop replace the rear yoke on the axle now it sounds like a bearing growl when I press on the gas only. It drops off when I let off. Annoying as heck. I did get the u-joints replaced but it's still there. Is it the bearing by the yoke?

this diff was not shimmed,,,or incorrectly shimmed...

the diff will soon fail..

The bearing by the yoke is the pinion front bearing. It is common for this bearing to have problems. It is best to get a bearing kit for your differential and have it installed. Be sure that there is a NEW crush sleeve in what ever kit you buy.

What was bad on yoke?
Was the yoke put on right with proper torque?

For rear end noise.

My guess is that when it threw the drive shaft it twisted off an ear. then i guess the mechanic cranked on the yoke nut and crushed the collar.

Or, the mechanic didn't tighten the yoke enough. If the diff. carrier was not removed from the case I doubt it is the shims in the rear. The pinion bearings are either loose or bad. This will will happen when the pinion nut is removed (as when the yoke was replaced) and the pinion bearing load (or torque) is removed from the pinion bearings. The load must be properly reset when reinstalling the yoke. If you keep guessing and run it with this "bearing growl", the ring and pinion gears will eventualy bind up and you will become a gear lube artist - painting a beautiful stripe of gear lube down the street. The pinion bearings should (at least) be checked - I would just replace them.

this repair was not properly completed ....yes the torque must be correct on the yoke nut ...but the rear diff needs inspection for any shimming or damage....I'm assuming the axle snapped off which most likely did damage to the rear diff componets...
