Hey, my 1995 chevy silverado 2wd 5.7L does not shift from 1st to 2nd when it should. It reaches the rpm based on the amount of gas i'm giving it, then stays at that rpm for about 2 secs then shift into 2nd gear. I also hear a clunk when it gears down into 1st when coming to a stop. I checked the tranny fluid, the color of the fluid (pinkish- red) and no burnt smell. Any information on this problem or possible solutions. Thank you for your time.

the fluid should be replaced with the filter /pan inspected for debris......the internal componets/pressures may have contamination...
how many miles since the last pan drop fluid change..?

i just got the truck about 6 weeks ago. It has 188,000km and the fluid looks in pretty good shape. Would you suggest a tranny fluid/filter change anyways?

same problem here for year 2000.
1. find from previous owner when fluid/filter was done
2. make pretty darn sure you have correct fluid level. those are VERY sensitive to fluid level. not recommending this, but i have mine slightly overfilled and problem is almost faint.
if your truck is not leaking ATF, fork for it and replace with best quality you can afford. i did mobil1 synth, but now switched to royal purple. it is expensive, but trannie is more.
3. i found from a reputable source that in some trucks, trannie control module must be recalibrated. unfortunately, it is proprietory software and dealership only. i was quoted about $100 and day at dealership, with no guarantees.
4. as of few days ago, i found that this, also, might be caused by faulty VSS sensor/loose plug/poor connection, located on trannie housing, next to output shaft on my yrs model. it is not giving proper feedback to TCM and that causes malshifts.
5. oh, yeah, ans sticky 1-2 valve. flush might be advised.

when ever you purchase a used vehicle it is wise to replace ALL fluids....the condition of the fluids usually will give a good amount of info on how the vehicle was maintained...
GM recommends replacing the trans fluid at 100,ooomi...if the previous owner followed these recomendations the transmission will need to be rebuilt...
replacing the transmission fluid with the new dexron VI, or the synthetic fluid with the pan cleaning and filter change my stop the irradic shift problems, as dexron III the original fluid was a problem..
hopefully you did not spend much for the vehicle..
