Hi guys. A few years ago I attempted to build this kit. I even made a thread about. I was too inexperienced and I lacked the equipment to do a good job. But now I know so much more than I did then, in part thanks to you guys. I have to decided to start a new with XJ220. It is the most beautiful super car of all time imo. Now I'm equipped with a proper airbrush(Iwata CR :sunglasse) and I think I'm up for it.
As for this kit this is the Tamiya version. Its pretty damn good for its time (1993) but it lacks alot of detail in the engine. I've yet to decide how I will tackle scratch building some of these parts. Progress will be slow on this thread. For the body I plan go with Creos Cranberry Red Pearl over a dark grey base, maybe a purple primer if I can find it.
Let me start with the engine. The block was painted Tamiya XF-16 flat aluminum. The lettering on the valve colors were covered with BMF and then sprayed MM aluminum plate metalizer. Then I took a cloth and wiped the lettering clean. After this I sealed the parts with metalizer sealer and then I toned down the BMF with testors flat clear acrylic with a brush.

The parts you see in the gold brown color is brush painted testors enamel mix of flat brown and gold. Then I washed the engine with thinned down oil paints(special thanks to MPWR, really sets it off).
The walls of the engine compartment are covered with heat shielding in real life. I intend to replicate this by using thin styrene covered with BMF.
The interior was airbrushed Testors Randome Tan acrylic. It will be flocked with tan flocking later on.

The exhaust was painted alcad chrome. Though I think I will respray as it looks too much like black chrome. I sprayed it over Testors gloss black enamel which I thought is the proper way to do it.

Nice start! The XJ220 is a sexy car and this Tamiya kit is underappreciated in my view. Regarding foiling the engine compartment, I think textured foil might look a little better than bmf. Cigarette pack lining, cake decorating foil, or Hiro adhesive foil would all work.

Looking very nice

TBH I would not recommend the MFH foil very much. It is quite thick and therefore not very friendly to work with on no flat surfaces. The foil wrapper form a pack of Gitanes or Gauloises filterless cigarettes is much better! :D

The thing is that from my reference pics the foil is not textured like you would see in cigarette packaging. It is very smooth. I'm considering just painting somethin styrene alcad chrome because it looks so smooth.

Figured this was coming. ;)
How about some larger pics? 800 x 600 will show your work off better.

Yea I definitely will next time. I had some issues when I started the thread. The pics were enormous and I just wanted them to fit. I do hope to get some more progress this week. My order of Creos Cranberry red pearl should be here in the coming days. I will have to test it on various shade primers to see how close I can get the paint to Monza red. I will also have to find a good compressor purchase very soon.
Nosfer your jag is badass. You definitely have me 1 uped on the engine department I hope to get maybe half that much detail. Where did you get all of the extra details from?. I've been wondering how to tackle of the missing parts Tamiya didn't make and I have no idea.

Yeah, I figured getting the Monza Red mixed up was not going to be a practical option. I wonder how close Tamiya's Mica red would be? It shouldn't be hard to get something that will look close, and look good on the body. I would guess that for the XJ220, Jaguar probably offered the option of painting it whatever colour the customer wanted- so an exact match may not be particularly important. Just as long as it looks good.

mica red over a black base is pretty close for that colour.

I'm one step ahead of you there. Ive tried mica red over black and dark grey, it loses too much brightness and starts to look purple. However im fairly confident that mr.color cranberry red pearl over a dark grey primer will be very very close and I will be happy with that. Here is a completed kit with ccrp. I figure a grey or dark grey base with this and it will be near spot on. I know jag let the owner pick whatever color but if it were me I would pick this color so I want to get as close as I can.

Sorry for such slow progress guys. I just wanted to let everyone know that my paint arrived yesterday.
2 Jars of Creos cranberry red pearl
1 jar mr color super clear 3 GX
250 ml of mr color thinner
All i have to do now is narrow my search for an air compressor. Im about to bite on an auction soon on an airbrush depot tank air compressor. Its got a water trap, regulator, and almost no pulsation. Its got a 2 year warranty and the price is pretty good. So hopefully by next week i am getting some painting done.

You were sayin that your gonna use some purple primer if you can find some. If your airbrushing the primer, just mix some red in with it.

It's nice to see the project similar to my own. I have semi assembled XJ220. I'd like to paint the body with the same color. Loking forward for the updates. :ylsuper:

Well i do have a small update for you all. I have tried the creos cranberry red pearl in experiments with mixed results. On a test body i had pretty good success. There was plenty of mica in the finish, a little rough but looked pretty good. When I had the body primed and in perfect shape for paint I sprayed again. This time I believe I thinned the paint too much. It was basically pigment with a little bit of pearl. I gave it about 4 mist coats, and 5-6 medium coats and the finish did not look any better. The paint layed on smooth but there was not enough mica in the finish and the paint was perfectly mixed.
I am heavily considering going with gloss aluminum from tamiya for this jag. I love the silver and the monza red so I beleive I could settle for gloss aluminum. I will definitely take another go at it again in the future for monza red. Creos Cranberry Pearl, with a balanced amount of thinner can be very close to monza but I think I may try CCRP over something like duplicolor electric red pearl to achieve more metallic depth. I don't have enough CCRP left to experiment with anymore and I don't think have the patience right now to wait 2-3 weeks for some more. Now the body is stripped and ready for primer.
The good news is that my airbrushes and compressors are working great.

That sounds like the same issues that i had with the Creos paint. It simply is too transparent.

Great subject matter--I also consider the XJ220 the most beautiful exotic. For the exhaust, how many coats of Alclad did you give it, and if more than one, how much time did you give between coats? That may be why the black is showing through.
