I have a 2000 1.8 ltr, manual transmission Passat at 191K miles. Over a month ago it had problems starting and stalling. It would initially start, I'd drive 30 miles to work, leave 5 hours later and it wouln't start (it cranks). It didn't matter if it had sit 5 hours or 24 hours. This would happen every couple of days. The car had also stalled after turning a corner.
I have a great mechanic who stressed over it a few days and decided to replace the fuel pump. I've had no problems until last week, a new type of starting problem...the gas pedal has to be at a particular angle for it to start. No big deal, it starts.
Then today, it died after turning a corner, and hasn't started...yet.
I've searched the forum trying to diagnose the problem myself to no avail. Other than a new fuel pump, the timing belt was replaced about 30K mi ago. Any ideas?

I had a similiar problem with my jeep cherokee. It would only start after a lot of cranking when the fuel was low in the gas tank and would stall out when cornering. I initially thought the problem to be the fuel pump. I did a little research into and found that there is an o-ring that is attached inline with the fuel pump. This o-rings allows the fuel pump to hold line pressure so the car will start easily and maintain pressure when cornering (like a hard corner that sloshes the gas away from the fuel pump area and causes fuel starvation.). I do not know if VW's have this installed or some other system to maintain fuel pressure but I would research that a little bit. Have you changed you fuel filter? Usually if you have a cloged fuel filter the car will idle fine but when you give it power it stalls out because not enough fuel can get thru the filter to fufill your request for more acceleration. This is probably not your issue, but something to look into perhaps.
