If you have a Bose head unit, you need to make sure the speakers are rted at 1 Ohm impedance. If not, you will less power from your speakers than from the Bose speakers.
If you are adding subs, you can simply tap into the high level signal between the amps and the speakers and take your signal wire from the power wire to the amps. That's what I did.

running from an amp is always going to make your speakers sound better, and the higher the pre amp running from the head, the better. I'm not a huge sound nut, but those are the basics from what i understand..
and if money is no object, just go to a custom audio shop, they can hook you up a godly system for a couple grand.. go to town.

try ebay.
if you do decide to get rid of the head unit goto crutchfield.com and look up new heads by car and see what'll fit. then use your discount and get it yourself. crutchfield has kits that make it look like a better fit, if it sits awkwardly. they're like $10-$20, if you get the deck through them it's free
