radio wiring

I have a 92 merc and it will only shift one time when I pull off. when its sitting still it will idle up and down to the fact some times it will shut off. it will not shift into drive or over drive it shut act as if the trans is slipping. I was told it could be the modulator sensor, control shift sensor, or possibly the transmission is gone. Tell me what u think anyone
